WhatsApp, the ideal companion of the hoaxes

WhatsApp is possibly the most used instant messaging application for exchanging short messages with friends, family and groups, but sometimes, the content that is shared may be uncertain or contain hoaxes. In today's article we explain how to identify them and avoid participating in the distribution of false messages.

On many occasions WhatsApp users have to deal with messages whose content usually confuses and even alarming the recipient, causing the latter in turn to spread the message to their contact list and so on among the users of the app until everything the world receives it.

This type of messages are called hoaxes or hoax (English term) , which aims to misinform users with false and alarmist messages. They are also sometimes used to trick victims into accessing a link and providing personal information, subscribing to premium messaging services or downloading files infected with malware.

Until not long ago, the hoaxes circulated through emails , but with the appearance of WhatsApp, they have made the leap to this other channel of communication, providing them with greater credibility to messages to be received directly from friends, family and acquaintances.
