A cocktail shaker once owned by gangster Al Capone was sold earlier this month, along with the rest of a collection that belonged to wealthy American dealer – the late Stanley Seeger.
The temptation of the prestigious items; including Lord Nelson’s teapot and a jug from the Titanic; resulted in a record breaking sale at Sotheby’s auction house in London, raising £7.3 million.
Al Capone’s cocktail shaker sold for 50 times more than expected, with the hammer coming down at £50,000.
The shaker was originally given to Capone as a Christmas present by his associates, and was engraved with the words: ‘To a “REGULAR GUY” From THE BOYS 1932’.
When Stanley Seeger later owned the shaker, it was used to serve up Bloody Mary cocktails to his guests. Seeger lived a quiet life in Sandsend and passed away in 2011 at the age of 81.
