Polycarbonate glassware from drinkstuff used at alcohol awareness event

At drinkstuff we are keen to promote the importance of having a sensible approach to alcohol consumption, so when we heard about a new alcohol awareness project called ‘Know Your Numbers’, we were interested to find out more.

During the event for staff at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS), our Polycarbonate glassware played a vital role in enabling staff to replicate their exact alcohol intake.

Cathy Rule, project manager for the Wessex AHSN Alcohol Quality Improvement Programme, tells us more about the event:

“In addition to helping employees to monitor their intake, the project will signpost them to resources to help them make the right choices, reduce alcohol consumption where required, and encourage more open and honest conversations about dealing with the complex relationship we have with alcohol at an individual, organisational and societal level.”

Wessex Academic Health Science Network (Wessex AHSN) is implementing the project as part of its Reducing Harm from Alcohol Programme.

“AHSNs are licensed by NHS England to improve the health and care of the nation through collaboration with patients, the NHS, academia and industry. We co-develop solutions to health challenges and unmet needs by supporting systemic change and speeding the adoption of innovation. Encouraging people to give a specific number to their drinking level rather than a category also avoids the stigma of labelling oneself or someone else as ‘alcohol dependent’ or ‘alcoholic’ and is more in keeping with other conditions where risk is measured on a continuum (e.g. blood pressure, cholesterol, weight).”

At the recent UHS Open Day, the Know Your Numbers project was launched with three activities:

  • Know Your Numbers beer goggles – can you walk in a straight line wearing beer goggles?

Participants stood at one end of the line and took nine steps, trying to keep on the line, and turning. The experience represented the effect that alcohol has on your brain.

  • Know Your Numbers clinic – talk to an expert to find out how to calculate alcohol units so you can know your number.
  • Know Your Numbers bar – pour yourself a drink – measuring out volumes of ‘alcohol’ to understand units.

“The polycarbonate glassware gave a professional and authentic edge to our Know Your Numbers bar, as it’s important for staff to be able to measure their alcohol intake using receptacles that they actually use.”
