June Investing Challenge Results- Gemini Portfolio

It’s July! And time for another update on my Grow Your Dough Throwdown portfolio. You may remember that at the beginning of the year I entered a challenge to grow $1,000 in the markets. I decided to take a combined approach using passive and active methods.

For my active portfolio, I invested $400 with Loyal3. For my passive portfolio, I invested $600 with Betterment. Here is my post that details the stocks that I purchased.

Even though it is not an even split, I decided to call my portfolio the Gemini Portfolio. It’s a little of this and a little of that. Sometimes balanced and sometimes not as we Gemini’s can be.

Where is the Benchmark?

Year to date, the S&P 500 is up 7.14%. I am benchmarking against the Total Return index which includes reinvested dividends. I reinvest my dividends as well so this index is more appropriate to use than the net or price returns. This performance is directly from the Standard and Poor website.

What is Working?

The passive and the active portfolio are both doing well! I am up in my Betterment portfolio, keeping pace with the return of the S&P 500.

In May I decided to change the allocation to all stocks. I thought that perhaps the 20% allocation to bonds has been affecting the performance. This has been a great decision so far and I plan to keep the allocation at 100% to stocks.

My active portfolio with Loyal3 is doing great as well! (Remember that I deposited $10 in Amazon to open the account so the actual balance for this challenge is a little lower than what is pictured). I am very happy with most of the holdings. Some of the individual stocks are struggling a little bit but I still believe that the stocks that I chose are good long term holds. And I love the fact that I can trade for free with Loyal3!

I thought it might make sense to show how the individual stocks are doing and what is lagging. I invested $50 into each stock, except for Amazon which had a $60 start.

What is Struggling?

June has been a pretty good month! Both my Loyal3 account and my Betterment account are positive and helping me to keep pace with the S&P 500.
Here are the June results.

What are the Takeaways?

Passive investing is pretty sweet. Betterment and Loyal3 make it very easy to take a vacation and let your money work for you, which is exactly what I did in June.
