Serge Lutens Discovering the Eaux

Serge Lutens is little known to people outside the fashion world. He is a french designer, photographer, film maker, hairstylist and a perfumer. In 50 years he has managed to be relevant to the few in every field where he could use his eccentric creativity. His photography has always managed to show the artistic side of make up while with his fragrances he has tried to strip everything out and leave the perfume speak for itself through pungent notes. Just like his photography the fragrances are elaborated and come out of a fantasy world where people need to shock with complicated details. You have to be a perfume lover and researcher to get Serge Lutens world of the Eaux and particularily love the clean and crisp fragrances. One is simple but fresh like L’Eau, other is a contradiction of hot and cold, while the newest one is a paradox. The perfume house of Serge Lutens keep the notes a secret so it is hard for me to tell the exact composition so I’ll try explain what I could get from the olfactive experience I had.

Serge Lutens Eaux

  • L’Eau Serge Lutens In my mind’s eye, I kept seeing a hot iron moving back and forth on freshly washed linen. I finally distilled the image into a fragrance to get it out of my head. This is the anti-fagrance for those days where we don’t feel like smelling of flowers, spices, or woods. It has notes citrus, magnolia, and white musk. It actually feels like soap, the most expensive soap they say.
  • L’Eau Froide Serge Lutens The hero of this story is a tree during the dog days of summer. If an incision is made in its trunk, “tears of glass” come out. Without air conditioning, the heat would kill it. Frankincense helps this scent preserve an icy cool. The fragrance has incence at the center of it, and mint seems the note which cools it dows. The scent starts with a sharp note but than it warms out after a few minutes. I don’t know how the perfumer has done it but it really gives the sense of warm and chill.
  • Laine de Verre Serge Lutens It is only after he had been penetrated by the winter that, laying down his arms, the Lord of Glass came to place at the feet of the Lady of Wool flowers and ferns which had frosted on him. Serge Lutens goes crazy with the names, Laine de Verre means ‘glass wood’ which is an insulating industrial material. This fragrance is as avant-garde as it can be with metallic burst. If you are looking to smell unique, this is the perfect fragrance.
