Five of the best hotel rooms in Manchester

Balcony King Room, Velvet

Located on Canal Street, Velvet is a former textile mill reborn as a decadent boutique hotel. There are 19 extrovert rooms and suites here; the most balanced of which are the mid-tier Balcony King rooms. These spaces are for the maximalists out there who like their furnishings oversized, their bed piled high with pillows and their wallpaper a bit wayward. Little luxuries like soft bathrobes and Ren toiletries add to the spirit of pampered playfulness. Velvet, 2 Canal St, Manchester M1 3HE

Superior Deluxe River View Room, The Lowry

Unless you’re in the market for the Presidential Suite, which comes complete with grand piano, the Superior Deluxe River View rooms are the finest slice of this established luxury hotel. Designed by Olga Polizzi, the interiors are all about restraint and easily-palatable style. Walk-in wardrobes, goose-down duvets and marble en-suites come as standard, but the very best thing is the view of the Trinity Bridge through the floor-to-ceiling glass. The Lowry, 50 Dearmans Pl, Salford, Manchester M3 5LH

Roof Terrace Eclectic Room, Eleven Didsbury Park

All of the rooms at this wisteria-fronted boutique hotel in Didsbury Village are lovely, but the Roof Terrace Eclectic Room takes first place for its rarity. Individually-designed, its USP is the private canopied outdoor space, where you can bathe in a freestanding cast-iron tub for two. In shades of pewter and soft ash, the styling is dreamy and the space abundant. If it’s simply too chilly to derobe on the terrace, there is another roll-top bath indoors, plus a walk-in monsoon shower and a generous supply of Temple SPA treats. Eleven Didsbury Park, Manchester M20 5LH

Super Suite, Malmaison Manchester

The mad Malmaison gets kookier with every room upgrade. At the apex is the absurd Super Suite, in which you’ll find a plunge bath, theatrically accompanied by a life ring and red-carpeted ladder. In the lounge there’s a massive wall-mounted screen, BOSE soundsystem and Moulin Rouge-inspired seating, as well as another bath (of course – where else?). One to let your hair down in. Malmaison Manchester, 1-3 Piccadilly, Manchester M1 3AQ

Penthouse with Private Roof Terrace and Hot Tub, Light ApartHotel

Not a hotel but an upscale collection of serviced apartments; Light ApartHotel’s spacious residences offer all the perks of a five-star stay, and then some. They want you to feel like a high roller here, and it’s hard not to when you’re chilling on the roof terrace of the premier penthouse. With ample room for entertaining, this 19th-storey show-off has green turfed outdoor space, a 50-inch TV and an open-air Jacuzzi with spectacular views over the Northern Quarter. The Light ApartHotel, 20 Church Street, Manchester M4 1PN
