Our stay of the week – W Verbier

Just when it seemed Verbier couldn’t get any more glamorous, a W landed. Shortly before Christmas ’13, Switzerland’s chicest alpine resort got an edge, tearing up the classic chalet rulebook with candied red bathroom doors, cool chrome lighting and Charles Eames furniture shapes.

A room with a view

Daring you to ‘cross the line into an extraordinary world’, the five-star W Verbier sets its stall out early with an impressive façade making way for those all-important design credentials. The 130 Swiss-style rooms, suites and residences are given the distinctive W treatment with mirror surfaces, poster-paint scatter pillows and creative use of materials. A snug throw and soft rug underfoot inject just enough Toast cosiness into the Manhattan-rooted minimalism.

Spectacular room

Michelin-starred chef Sergi Arola switches up Swiss classics with his signature Spanish flair at his namesake restaurant at the W Verbier. Look through floor-to-ceiling windows from contemporary banquette seating to remind you that you’re in the Swiss Alps, while the signature patatas bravas provide a welcome taste of Madrid. For lighter bites, the Eat-Hola Tapas Bar and W Café have you covered, while the cocktails come thick and fast at Off Piste and Carve.

AROLA Restaurant

The spa is worth packing your cossie for too. Detox is made easy at the 800 metre-squared outdoor swimming pool and Jacuzzi. Tired muscles can enjoy some post-ski pampering with signature treatments, like the Mogul Leg Pump, and Phyto 5 and Gemology products. The hotel gym, FIT, can help you get skiers’ glutes if you’re not so keen to hit the slopes.

AWAY Spa

Primed for the partying set, the W is an easy snow-shoe shuffle from the aprés action. With the main gondola picking you up from right outside the hotel, you can also be schussing around Les 4 Vallées in minutes and well connected to reach mountain altitudes as high as 3,330 metres. Checking in over the summer? Verbier’s runs are a dream for hikers and bikers – with the ‘Fire Road’ the go-to for dizzying views over the valley. Just keep an eye out for the (very sedate) cattle being herded down the mountain.
