I dit it again! I dyed some bed linens and I'm so happy with the result, I wanted to share the love with you. I've had these beautiful hemp bed linens for quite some time and was eyeing some dark grey linens online to change a bit my bedroom. And then it hit me, why not try to dye the linens I already had in my linen closet and save some money? So I investigated and found some valuable information on the
RIT Studio website. You can select the color of your dreams from their
Pantone seasonal collection and they tell you what color dye to mix and in which quantities to get the desired color. Genius, right? My choice was
Turbulence by Pantone. So I mixed, machine washed and voilà!
To get the Pantone 'Turbulence' shade, I had to mix some black, dark green and some lemon yellow liquid dyes. My original linens were a chalk white as seen on the background.
RIT Studio recommended 1 dose of black, 1 dose of dark green and 1/2 dose of lemon yellow.
I mixed the right ratio of liquid dye in a plastic container, then added some really hot water, stirred, and added the mixture in the detergent compartment of my washing machine
(I don't have a top load washing machine but a front-load one, so I couldn't put in my liquid mixture before my linens) while the washing machine cycle had already started.
Before, I had washed the linens and unfolded them, still damp, in the washing machine to ensure that all parts of the fabrics would get the same amount of dye. I also added some white vinegar in the softener compartment of my washing machine. White vinegar is known to set the color on freshly dyed fabrics.
And voilà the final result. It's the perfect shade of grey I was looking for, all for under 12 dollars!
PS: Make sure you rinse your washing machine - I did an extra rinsing cycle before loading a new laundry.
