Riley | Bedroom Inspiration

We are moving house at the end of the month to what we feel will be our ‘forever’ home and in preparation for it, i’ve been seeking inspiration and ideas for Riley’s new room. He’s always been in the ‘nursery’ but we feel that he’s reached a stage now where he deserves a Big Boy room with a more modern feel to it and one that can change and adapt to his needs as he’s grows up.

I’m loving the whole scandinavian vibe at the moment and although i’m sure the use of black, white and yellow in a toddler’s room wouldn’t be the first port of call for most parents, there really is something sophisticated and classic about it. And it’s bang on trend right now, with more and more parents opting to use this limited colour palette in conjunction with texture, patterns and geometric designs.

Think white walls, white furniture and a pop of colour with accents in black and yellow – clean, fresh and modern with an almost retro feel to it.

We’ve made the decision to upgrade Riley from a toddler bed to a single bed so we are on the hunt for a white bed frame and mattress. This may sound crazy as he’s not even 3 yet but we’ve never used a safety rail because he’s never needed one or fallen out of bed and he can easily get in and out of a normal single bed anyway, so it seems like a logical transition to us.

We have already purchased the Black Clouds Duvet Set (Farg & Form), the Yellow Clouds Lampshade (Ikea) and the Fine Little Day Trees Blanket (This Modern Life) and have chosen a selection of cushions in various sizes with different prints and patterns to accessorise the bed. We’re planning to adorn the walls with A3 posters like these camera and moon ones (both This Modern Life) and have an idea for homemade bunting above Riley’s bed using a Black Felt Balls Garland (This Modern Life), some A6 postcards and geometric mini pegs.

Furniture wise we want to keep his room as clear and uncluttered as possible so aside from his bed, we’re only looking at purchasing a side table and some storage. We also want to create an area for ‘quiet time’ so are going to invest in some White Picture Ledges (Ikea) to display all of his books, a White Retro Chair (eBay) layered with cushions for him to sit comfortably and a teepee tent for a little hideaway. He is forever making dens under the kitchen table so i know he’d really appreciate one of these in his bedroom.

I adore retro prints, vintage toys and wooden toys so they’ll be a bright and bold selection of these displayed around the room to add a pop of colour and an element of fun as well.

It’s a really exciting time for us so i can’t wait to start putting these plans in to motion and seeing the end results. I’m looking forward to sharing our new home with you over the coming months, so you can expect lots of Home & Decor posts and Room Tours appearing on the blog very soon!
