how to bird of paradise in 8 steps

Sometimes when I position my body into the aptly named Bird of Paradise asana, I feel like singing sweetly like a joyous bird playing in the treetops. But most of the time, I’m holding onto my lower lip for dear life or praying I don’t pull my groin or wondering how in the heck can I stand up straight.

Yes, despite that I’ve been practicing this pose for more years than I can count on my fingers, I continue to worry about all these physical adjustments alongside maintaining my intentions of patience and compassion towards myself.

We don’t all have time to get to class every day or to even make it to a 90-minute yoga class when we do (but we try our best, right? wink wink). When we do drop in to a class, elegantly challenging poses are often bypassed rather than broken down. I am a firm believer in offering many tricks and options towards an advanced pose so everyone is moving through the same general shapes, and so beginners feel inspired by what they’re working towards.

Following are step-by-step ways to prep your body and get into Bird of Paradise and its close—and equally as legit—cousin (Chick of Paradise?).
