The Pinterested Parent

There Is Nothing Funny About A Sick Toddler

As I sit on my couch covered in a pile of foil wrappers from the countless number of Hershey Kisses that I have been chasing back with wine, I reflect on the past two days. A stomach bug has found its way into our home and targeted our little one.

We already endured one very sleepless, very crappy night & yes, the pun is completely intended. My poor baby whimpered and moaned the night away, filling up her diaper 4 times before the morning came. I have never been so grateful that my daughter is still in diapers. Without the diapers, it could have been a craptastrophe. The night was spent with her in my arms as I rocked & comforted her.

In the morning we went to the doctor’s office. Mai was clingy and out of sorts. They needed to take her temperature. They took it rectally for the most accurate result. I cringed & squeezed her hand as we waited to learn that she had a fever. She looked up at a poster on the wall of a young boy and a nurse.
She pointed and said “Look Mama, they put something in his butt too.” Ummm yeah, maybe they did. Even with a fever she can still crack me up.

When we returned home, her tummy continued to grumble.
“Are you pooping again, baby?”
“Yeaaaaaah!”
As I bent down to sniff her bottom, I received a friendly fart to the face. Again, I am so very thankful for those diapers.

She did not have much of an appetite, but we were more concerned with her getting her fluids. She sat on mommy’s lap during dinner. After she did not touch her food, I grabbed her plate and finished her portion. “Daddy, I finish all my food. I want a snack now.” It is nice to see that the little con artist in her is still well.

It was going to be an early night for Mai. As I ran a bath, my husband tried to get her undressed. She was having a common pre-bath meltdown when she began to projectile vomit everywhere. She threw up in her hands, in her potty & on the wall. We held on to her & bent her forward slightly to keep her from choking. She continued her assault on our bathroom when Duke walked into her line of fire. Our poor daughter sobbed as we tried to get her out of her puke soaked clothing. “Nooooo, I want the puke sweatshirt.” She grabbed and pulled at her shirt insistent to keep it on. She cried as she fought to keep her soiled clothing. We were unsure of what to do to calm her down. My husband glanced over at the dog.

“Mai, you threw up all over the Duke.”
“Teee heee heee hee.” she chuckled.

It has been a difficult few days for our munchkin and us, even a tough one for Duke. In the midst of the sleepless nights, the diarrhea and a puke covered mess were lots of cuddles, kisses and even a few funny moments and smiles. It seems that even the worst of days are still good ones. Get well my angel.
