Met Gala 2014: My fashion hits & misses

Nothing to Disclose

As you all know, the annual Met Gala was last night- AKA the biggest night of the year for avant-garde, eccentric celebrity fashion! I always get excited to see what the stars- mainly the women, let’s be honest- wear to the event, so you know I was checking Instagram about every five minutes last night to stay up-to-date.

Having studied Fashion Business in college for the past few years (I’m less than two weeks away from graduation, woo!), I can definitely appreciate the very runway appropriate, I-can’t-believe-she-stepped-out-in-that outfits that some people wear to the Met. I just think they’re fun! That being said… some of the looks were still duds for me. If you’re also a fashion-minded person and love these Met Gala recaps, keep reading to see my hits and misses. (Oh, and make sure to leave a comment and share yours!)

First up are the hits:

1. I thought this floral pastel Dennis Basso gown was gorgeous on Hayden Panettiere. It’s simple and elegant, but the subtle sunflower gives it interest.

2. I know Marion Cotillard’s Dior Haute Couture dress wasn’t the biggest statement on the red carpet, but I love how the straps become nude as they reach the shoulder- plus, the dress hits her at a perfect length. And her hair! Oh and it’s Dior Haute Couture.

3. Blake Lively could probably wear a brown paper bag and she would RADIATE. She’s gorgeous, her body is bangin’… this really doesn’t require much explanation, right? (This gown is Gucci Premiere.)

4. I love this vampy look Selena Gomez wore! She is just stunning in a dark lip, in my opinion- I always think a matching dress/lip color is great on the red carpet. Diane von Furstenburg KNOWS how to dress a woman’s shape.

5. I’ll admit that I have a secret obsession with the Kardashians (love the show(s), I honestly can’t help it). Kim has made some questionable fashion choices lately, but I have to say I love this Lanvin gown on her! The blue is gorgeous. Kanye is still Kanye.

And lastly:

6. Sarah Jessica Parker pulled a Carrie Bradshaw and wore this BEAUTIFUL gown by Oscar de la Renta. I probably love this only because I love SATC way more than I should, but what a statement! If you’re going to the Met Gala, why not go all out?

Lastly, the misses:

1. I don’t understand. I’m sorry.

2. Sarah Paulson, I really wanted to like you in this custom Prada dress! I think the cut is cute (cute isn’t supposed to be a word we use to describe fashion, but oh well), and the green is striking with your hair color/skin tone. It’s the fit in the upper body/arms and the silver lines that leave me in disarray.

3. She (Chloe Moretz) is gorgeous, so I just feel like she could have been put in something more youthful/fun than this Chanel gown. This is borderline rodeo-meets-victorian, and I don’t know what that means.

4. I’ve actually liked some of the risks Nicole Richie has taken with fashion in the last several years, but this Donna Karan Atelier gown just looked kind of frumpy to me. Like they took some strips of velvet-something and glued it onto muslin. Again, I apologize. I like her hair!

5. Katie Holmes wore Marchesa, and I think I would like this if it was in a different color. It’s really not bad, there’s just something off about it to me. I don’t know- what did you guys think of this one? There’s no denying she still looks gorgeous!

6. Beyonce’s Givenchy Haute Couture outfit made it onto lots of “best dressed at the Met” lists. I feel like I should like this- the veil is cool, as are her lips- but I’m just not into the rest of it. Part of me wishes the opaque black shorts/skirt thing was a BIT longer.

What were your favorite and not-so-favorite looks at the Met Gala 2014? Thanks for reading!
