New Wet n Wild Smoke and Melrose eyeshadow palette (+ Urban Decay Naked 3 comparisons)

Purchased/Affiliate Links

You might have already heard the buzz about this new Wet n Wild Smoke and Melrose eyeshadow palette- it’s generating quite a bit of hype around the ‘web as we speak. I snatched this up a couple of days ago at my local Walgreens for, get this, TWO BUCKS. Select Wet n Wild products are on sale this week for $2 (through tomorrow, 8/30), so if you have a Walgreens nearby, I might suggest going there NOW to see if you can also find this palette for a steal.

First things first: this Smoke and Melrose palette looks oddly similar to the highly coveted (and expensive) Urban Decay Naked 3 palette. If I hadn’t received Naked 3 for Christmas last year, I can honestly tell you I think this Wet n Wild option would suffice.

BUT since I would hate to spoil the main point of this post, keep reading for my full thoughts comparison swatches (dupes!) between Wet n Wild Smoke and Melrose and Urban Decay Naked 3.

Wet n Wild Smoke and Melrose swatches

Before I get into comparing the two palettes, a quick overview of my thoughts on Wet n Wild Smoke and Melrose:

Pros:

  • Overall pigmentation is comparable to mid-to-high range eyeshadows when worn over a primer
  • Eyeshadows are smooth, easy to blend, and apply without issues
  • Eyeshadows last a solid 8 hours when worn over a primer
  • Great mix of eyeshadow finishes: quint contains matte, satin, shimmer, and glitter shades
  • Budget friendly!

Cons:

  • Base shade lacks slightly in pigmentation (compared to other shades)

So, I’d definitely recommend this palette for quality. Now let’s get into the fun stuff, Urban Decay dupes!

Wet n Wild Smoke and Melrose vs. Urban Decay Naked 3

The similarities become obvious just by comparing the palettes side-by-side: both contain a mix of rose-toned, shimmer-infused eyeshadows. Obviously you’re getting a larger selection of shades with the Naked 3 palette, but that’s (maybe) justified in the price difference.

I found that 4 of the 5 shades in Smoke and Melrose are close enough to Naked 3 to be considered pretty close dupes. Take a look:

Wet n Wild Browbone vs. Urban Decay Nooner: In my swatch Nooner looks a BIT more pigmented than the Wet n Wild shade, but I promise in real life (and when worn) these look essentially the same. I was pleasantly surprised by how soft and smooth the Wet n Wild eyeshadow is for a matte!

Wet n Wild Crease vs. Urban Decay Trick: I’ve always found Trick to be sort of a PITA, honestly, but that is clearly NOT the case with Wet n Wild’s version! It swatches beautifully, like a prettier, more vivid Trick.

Wet n Wild Eyelid vs. Urban Decay Mugshot: The Wet n Wild shade almost appears to have a slight reddish undertone to it when swatched next to UD Mugshot. When applied on the lid, though, they have the same effect- I would definitely say these are close enough to be dupes.

Wet n Wild Base vs. Urban Decay Dust (left) and Burnout (right): For comparison purposes, I wanted to show the Wet n Wild shade next to both Dust and Burnout. It’s darker and more peach-toned than Dust, and comes much closer in color and finish to Burnout (especially when worn, like most of these).

Bottom line: If you don’t already own Urban Decay Naked 3, Smoke and Melrose is DEFINITELY worth tracking down- especially if you can find it today and get it for $2, while it’s still on sale (if not, the normal $4.99 price tag is still a great deal).

FYI, Wet n Wild has a limited edition display of these new 5-pan eyeshadow palettes (see Nouveau Cheap’s “sightings” post HERE) and they’re popping up at Walgreens. Good luck hunting, if you choose to do so!
