KEEPING IT SIMPLE

Since moving to Nashville, a little over a year ago, we’ve been making big changes at home. As I have shared before, when we moved we got rid of well over 50% of our belongings. For those of you who have been following along over the years, you know that I used to be a serial thrifter. Key words: used to be. When packing up our Texas abode and preparing to move to a new home (and new state) I discovered something other than just how much stuff we had accumulated over the years. I realized that I had a problem. I was a pack rat. A future hoarder if I must. Our house was cluttered to the max and to be honest, it had a thrift store feel and smell—something I was not proud of and I decided it was time to make a big change. We began literally tossing out the old and over the span of a year collecting the new, or often times new-to-us. At first, of course, it was difficult. I had so many treasures that I had spent countless hours hunting for, or that reminded me of my childhood, or some other reason that I felt the need to hang on. My keep pile far outweighed my donate pile and my mind would not be changed. I needed to keep some of this stuff! By the end of the process, and as a great surprise to me, I was letting things go that I really thought I couldn’t. My keep pile was looking almost too small and the donate boxes were overflowing. It felt good. So damn good! And it still feels good.

We are happier with our more minimal lifestyle. I do not thrift like I once did and you know what? I don’t miss it. We do hit up the monthly Nashville flea market once in a while, but usually leave empty-handed. It’s been a good change for us. One of these days I’ll get around to sharing more of our home. It’s been a year of patience and self-control, and the house is starting to come together and be something we are proud of. I just wanted to share my story. It’s a pretty big success story if you ask me.
