TRANSITION / A ROOM FOR AN “ALMOST” TEENAGER

My oldest daughter Milla Plum recently had her room made over as a part of an ongoing collaboration between us and The Land Of Nod. Her old room had a very young feel to it with a lot of vintage pieces and artwork that she no longer wanted in the space. She will be twelve next month and so we wanted to make sure we could give her a room that could transition easily into a teenager-approved hangout and really hone in on her style and interests.

With the help of The Land Of Nod design team, we were able to achieve our goal, giving Plum a grown-up space that is still age appropriate, with plenty of storage, and coolness. Her favorite part of her room besides her big, comfy bed is the little sofa that pulls out to a twin bed for when guests sleep over. This was by far the most challenging of the rooms we made over, as Plum has quite specific taste and needed to be sure each piece was perfect. She absolutely loves the finished product, and now we have a hard time getting her to come out of her new room.

We hung an oversized black and white print by Debbie Carlos on one wall and left the wall across from that bare, for future band posters. Her goal for the next year is “To go to so many concerts and collect cool posters for my wall. And cool video game posters, too.”

We chose a giant multicolor rug to cover up the existing carpet. It’s a really cool addition to the space.

Her five favorite things: 1. My Family 2. Drawing, art, and animating. 3. Sushi. 4. Alternative music. 5. Long boarding.

Reading Warriors with Bubble. “Warriors is a series about cats who fight and defend the Four Clans. It’s my favorite book series.”

We hung a Bentwood Pendant from West Elm which creates cool lines on the walls when lit up.

Plum’s favorite bands and musicians: Birdy, Imogene Heap, RED, Imagine Dragons, The Beatles, and Fall Out Boy. Her favorite video games: Last Of Us, Minecraft, Plants Vs. Zombies, and Five Night’s At Freddy’s.

The cool doll house that she received for Christmas last year is used solely for her Pet Shops. (I love that she still plays with these.)
