sewing: pocho ruby dress

the super fabulous miss matatabi is hosting nani IRO month, and I whipped up a suuuuuuper comfy and adorable double gauze ruby dress to celebrate!

summer is sort of kicking my ass around here (anyone else??) so I’ve been pretty much doing everything at the last possible minute in a huge rush. this dress was cut out and sewn up yesterday morning before we left for a pool date. I threw on the dress, wore it all day, and I just might be planning to wear it wearing it today as well. the whole dress came together in just about two hours, so it’s a win in all respects.

the only problem was that we arrived home last evening to pouring rain, so these photos were taken at the edge of the garage by Kahlin, the official gnats back-up photographer.

the pattern is Made by Rae’s Ruby Top & Dress, and it really is a great one! I’ve made a both a top and a tunic version before, but this was the first dress I made. my measurements fall into the size xl for hips and waist, but my bust falls into the xxl range. I knew that there is a fair amount of ease, so I just went ahead and made the straight xl for this dress.

the only edit I made was a cheater sway-back adjustment, which I’m finding that I pretty much always need to make so I really should just plan ahead for that.

in this case, I made the dress up and then realized I had an excess pool of fabric in the back, so I took apart the shoulder seams, cut about 1″ off the top of the back bodice piece, and then sewed the shoulder seams back together aligning the raw edges on the arm side. then I just trimmed the neckline side to even it up. it would have been easier to do from the beginning than after I had already finished seams, but I made it work.

you can see in this (slightly blurry) pic belowthat there’s still a little bit of pooling, but it’s loads better. next time I’ll make things a bit simpler and start with the edits instead of taking things apart.

the fabric I used is nani IRO pocho in navy with metallic blue dots (available here from miss matatabi), and I just love it! but really, what nani IRO fabric do I not love? if you’re looking to get some fabric and join in on the fun, I still have a few prints here in my shop, and miss matatabi has a fabulous selection of nani IRO here.

you can find even more with hashtags #ilovenaniiro and #naniiromonth on instagram, and check out all of these fab sites for more nani IRO goodness this month!
