juba shorts tutorial: pockets for men

This post was written by Jane of Buzzmills.

I can not tell you how happy I am about Rachael’s new juba shorts pattern!

At first when she put a call out for pattern testers for her men’s version I hesitated. I’ve never made any men’s clothes before (aside from a few freezer paper stenciled tees) and I wasn’t sure if my husband would actually wear something I made him. But, after showing him a picture of the shorts, he said “sure!”

And he loves them!

My first (tester) pair were made with double cloth cotton from Rachael’s shop. I can tell, just by looking at them, how comfortable they are. They are perfect for lounging around and for strolls along the beach (and frisbee). But, aside from comfy, they also look great. Good enough to leave the house great! Which, of course means that they need…

POCKETS!

Adding pockets is easy peasy thanks to a downloadable pocket pattern from Rachael! Here’s a little tutorial to show you how. Click here to download the pocket pattern and then let’s get started…

One.

Cut out your pattern pieces. You will cut the back pattern piece as stated, but the front pattern piece changes a bit. Begin with the pocket facing pattern, lay it on top of the shorts front pattern piece. Cut along the slanted line of the pocket to make your new Front Pattern piece.

Two.

Cut fabric. Use your new pattern piece for shorts front. Cut two pocket facing pieces (mirror image) and two pocket backs (mirror image).

Three.

Once you’ve got all of your pieces cut begin by pinning the pocket facing to the shorts front with right sides together (RST) along the slanted edge. Stitch along the slanted edge with a 1/4″ seam allowance.

Four.

Flip facing toward the inside of shorts (so wrong sides are facing), press and edgestitch along the slanted edge.

Five.

Lay short fronts with wrong sides facing up. Align pocket back with the pocket facing RST, pin along the bottom edge, around the curve and up the side. Stitch only the two pocket pieces together with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Finish seam allowance with pinking shears, a zig zag stitch, or by serging.

Six.

Baste pocket back to the short fronts along the top and side edges with a 1/4″ seam allowance.

Seven.

Repeat the steps above for the opposite leg, and then follow the rest of the pattern instructions as written.

Before you know it, you’ll have a great pair of shorts, with pockets, to wear comfortably all summer long!

Hooray! Here’s to being able to make clothes for the entire family, even Dad!
