tutorial: easy elastic-waist tutu

perfect for halloween or just everyday fancy fun, this easy elastic-waist tutu is a quick sewing project with lots of impact.

skirt shown measures 18″ in length (not including waistband elastic) and fits a 21″ waist. measurements for making your tutu any size are also included. I used white matte tulle for the top layer and shiny tulle in platinum for the bottom layer, as well as this metallic waistband elastic (all from Jo-Ann).

supplies needed

two 3 yard cuts of 54″ wide tulle (can be same color or two different colors)
1 yard waistband elastic
thread and hand-sewing needle
rotary cutter and mat
sewing machine

instructions:

1. fold first piece of tulle so that the center fold of fabric is aligned, and measure 19″ from folded edge. use rotary cutter to trim off unfolded edge. (for a shorter/longer skirt, cut desired length plus 1″.) repeat with second piece of tulle.

2. cut length of thread approximately 56″ (or double the desired waist measurement plus 12″) and thread needle.

3. align two pieces of tulle along center fold of fabric. beginning at one edge of the piece, hand-stitch 1/2″ from the folded edge with a large running stitch to gather the skirt.

4. continue hand-stitching for entire length of fabrics, keeping folded edges aligned.

5. tie end of thread to beginning, forming a circle. distribute gathers evenly.

6. cut 21″ length of waistband elastic (or 1″ shorter than desired waist measurement). overlap raw edges by 1/2″ and zigzag stitch along both sides to secure.

7. pin skirt to inside of waistband elastic as shown.

8. use a long zigzag machine stitch to attach skirt to elastic, stretching elastic slightly as you sew.

all that’s left is to wear and enjoy. and maybe make one for yourself?

happy stitching!
