book review: winter woven

this is a sponsored post.

Winter Woven is an absolutely beautiful book, and I’m happy to be able to share a little peek inside with you today!

about the book:

Winter Woven is a storybook about losing things. Because all of us have lost something. Maybe we’ve lost our keys. Perhaps we’ve lost our direction. Maybe we’ve even lost someone we care about.

Piper is a nine year-old girl who loses a scarf. In her desperate search for it she encounters a very frightening snowman along the way, and is forced to face loss and crisis for the first time in her life. The story is vividly told with original oil paintings by Indianapolis artist, Kyle Ragsdale, and written by first-time author, Garrett Curry.

the first thing I noticed about this book is the beautiful hand-lettering. if you’ve been following on instagram, you know I’ve been doing some of my own hand-lettering and I’ve been enjoying it so much. I’ve always been a bit of a font-o-phile, but my appreciation for all things font-y has definitely grown as I delve further into creating my own letters and words and shapes. and just looking at the pretty words on the pages of this book makes me happy.

the artwork is beautiful as well, dreamy and captivating. it really echoes the emotions of the characters through the book and makes the story that much more powerful.

the story is quite beautiful, well-told, and enjoyable for children and adults alike, whether you’ve lost someone close to you or not. I think that the crafter in all of us can certainly relate to the sadness of losing a handmade item!! and we just might all be able to relate to the feeling Piper has when she receives a handmade gift that she doesn’t really like. eek. been there.

as parents to a child who lost a mother so young (more about that here), Nick and I definitely have a heightened awareness of the effects of loss and have a special appreciation for well told stories about death and grief. often those stories about loss are hyper-focused on how you are supposed to feel or telling you that it’s ok to feel however you’re feeling… but this story does a really great thing in that it just tells the story. it gives you an insight to how the characters feel about the death of a family member through a story about a lost scarf, but it lets the reader follow along without telling you how or what or why to feel.
