Hunter Valley Day Trip: Balloons

Last Saturday Dillon, Sabrina, Edward, Johnny, Felicia, Bryan, Mabel and I headed to Hunter Valley for a day trip, supposedly to visit the botanical gardens. As per usual, instead of ending up where we were supposed to go, we found ourselves in a golden wheat field by the side of the road, with a stunning lake and a direct view of the sun. We climbed over a barbed wire fence and ran in the field with balloons until the sun sank deep into the horizon, and the night began. There is something quite magical about standing knee high in a wheat field during the end of autumn, holding balloons against the everchanging sky, with the chilly air biting into your fingers. I felt a little like we belonged on the set of Moonrise Kingdom. You only start looking for the feeling of childhood again when you have lost it from growing up – the feeling of being a kid; of being able to laugh at immature jokes without really understanding what they mean; the lack of politics in friendships, and the simplicity of making choices. One more year left of being a teenager, before I fully progress into adulthood. The thought is frightening.
