Wee Wednesday: Alpaca Farm Adventures

www.knittedbliss.com

It was Canadian Thanksgiving this past weekend, so we took some time to go up North to Sudbury and spend time with family. Lila was particularly excited that her godfather made her a real wooden hockey stick, cut to her size, capped and taped just right. She thought it was the coolest! Here she is, learning some new ball hockey moves in the driveway:

Lila has always been very interested in balls and the different types used in different sports, so I suspect she might be pretty handy with sports when she gets bigger. Lord knows where she gets it, I’m certainly not the slightest bit sportsy.

On our way back down south to Toronto, we stopped to visit Zenitude‘s (her real name is Lise) alpaca farm in northern Ontario, where we proceeded to take a million photos of these super adorable alpacas. Because how can you not take a million photos when confronted with so much cuteness? It was a grey and rainy day, but fortunately the rain held off while we got to spend time with these sweet tempered beauties:

I can’t believe I’ve never been to an alpaca farm before. Alpacas are very well suited to the Canadian climate, since they are used to extremes and are hardy for the cold winters in their home country of Peru. Lila thought they were some sort of sheep at first, and kept saying ‘baa baa’, but then eventually we got her used to the idea that these were alpacas. It was so amazing, and somehow a little magical. I could have stayed there all day.

But what is also interesting is that Lise has a shop right in her home, full of roving, yarn, kits, knitted and felted items, soaps… a real treasure trove of so many different things, many of which are made with the wonderful alpaca fiber. On the labels, she even writes in which alpaca the fiber came from! I did pick up some new treasures, but I haven’t snagged photos of them yet (too busy going through a million alpaca photos and loving every single one). More to come!
