DIY: Tie Dye tank top tutorial

I really, really love how this top turned out. I made it during the C&A fashion event. The set up was prepared perfectly – we got plastic aprons, gloves, a tank top for each and an instruction manual with many possibilities on how to tie dye our shirts. But I have thing annoying thing in me – once I see an instruction, this is exactly what I’m not going to do. So I just did what I thought would give a nice result.. and it did

So I decided to share with you this little tutorial! Hope you will like it.

You will need:

  • 100% cotton tank top
  • Clothes you don’t care getting dirty or an apron
  • Plastic gloves
  • Fabric dye of your favorite colors
  • Rubber bands
  • Bucket or a large bowl
  • Vinegar
  • Salt
  • Plastic bag
  • Disposable (plastic) table cloth (we used a kind of metal framework over buckets as you see on the photo below)

Instructions:

1. Fill the bucket in water, add generous amount of salt (about a cup), mix.
2. Soak your tank top in salty water. This will help the dye to bond to the fabric better. Wring the top.
3. Tie the fabric as shown below:

4. Dying the top:

5. Wring the top carefully by squeezing it. Try not to mess up the dye! But don’t worry too much, since it’s an abstract pattern and most chances it will look great even if you ocassionaly leave spots of different colors on the top.
6. Wrap the top in a plastic bag and leave it for a night.
7. Next morning, wash it carefully with running water.
8. Fill the bucket with water just enough to cover the top, add vinegar (generous amount) and soak the top in it till the evening.
9. Wash the top and dry it.
10. Wear the top, take a photo and send me for a feature

ENJOY!
