A quick note on disclosure

The majority of the time when I talk about something, review something or just mention it in passing I have bought and paid for it with my own money or have no more than a personal user interest in said item, event, website, AN Other thing.

Occasionally I will be sent something to review or asked to write a sponsored post. And I do. But I always tell you. I like to think I can test out and write about products I’ve been sent for free without bias but it would be wholly unfair of me not to tell you if I’ve received something for free, been sent somewhere to review the experience or asked to write a sponsored post. Fair enough, right?

I see a lot of opportunities ping into my inbox from PR companies which, for whatever reason, I turn down because they don’t suit me/work for this site and you, my readers. But then a couple of weeks later I’ll see that opportunity crop up elsewhere both disclosed and undisclosed across various sites and it’s obvious what’s going on. So of late I’ve been making a bit of a fuss when I rave about something or solo highlight a brand (which I haven’t been paid for/sent for free) or saying ‘I wasn’t sent this’ or ‘they haven’t paid me’ or ‘they haven’t asked me to write this.’ I’m going to stop doing that.

I will always tell you when I have been sent something for free to review, I will always let you know if a post is sponsored or if I’m getting something out of posting that post, but everything else? I’m just going to write the post and publish it as normal without getting into a tizz. Reverse disclosure doesn’t work because if I forget to say “WAIT, WAIT, WAIT THIS I PAID FOR THIS” too often then we might get to a point where you’ll think everything which doesn’t carry that panicked cry is sponsored or supplied by an outside source. Make sense?

So let’s agree now – if it’s free or paid for I’ll continue to disclose. If not I’ll just carry on chatting and leave it as it is.
