Wardrobe philosophy: my five essential fall/winter coats

If you live in a place where winter actually involves snow and your main form of transportation is a bike (OK, and I’ll admit to being hugely addicted to Uber), good coats become of utmost importance. By a good coat, I mean one that is both functional as well as shows off your personal style and blends in with the rest of your wardrobe.

In my case, where it’s cold pretty much all year round with the exception of a few months in summer, investing in a few different options seems like a wise wardrobe decision. Collecting different coats isn’t something to necessarily do in the course of a single season; as the price tags for real wool and real leather are usually quite hefty, just take your time to find out what’s still missing to make your outerwear just as great as what’s underneath.

These are the five coats that are ‘essentials’ to me and that I wear every fall and winter, pretty much to the same extent. I say ‘essentials’ because of course not everyone is in the position of rotating different coats and one leather jacket and a long, sleek winter coat would be my top two picks.

After that explanation, let’s move on to my five fall/winter coat essentials.

1. The long, wool duster coat
Coats so long they nearly sweep the floor (or am I just that short?): best invention since grilled cheese. Hands down. A coat that drapes around like robe (a very fancy one at that) and hits at the ankles, is what I love wearing most to feel dressed up and cool. There, I said it. This new one I’m wearing in the top photo really makes me feel badass.

2. The leather biker jacket
One of my ultimate wardrobe darlings is without a doubt the biker jacket. Getting more beautiful with every time you wear it, a perfect leather biker adds a touch of rock and rebel to even the most basic of looks.

3. The teddy coat
Like a wearable hug, a teddy coat is what you put on to give skinny jeans a bit of boho flair and to make yourself feel like the cute and cosy cuddly thing that you are. The Max Mara coat Carine Roitfeld regularly rocks is on my wishlist of out-of-reach items (the one we all keep on Net-a-Porter, filled with designer sweaters, Alaïa heels and two thousand euro leather pants). On a more wallet-friendly note, I have a teddy coat by SuperTrash that I get a ridiculous amount of comments on.

4. The bomber jacket
Whether you’re affectionate towards athletic styles or navigate towards a flight jacket (in that case, Alpha Industries is your absolute classic go-to brand), a bomber jacket toughens up your look a bit. It’s a great piece to play around with to add contrast and volume – I like to pair mine with lace dresses, a sleek maxi dress or printed trousers.

5. The statement coat
Speaking for myself, most of my winter wear is on the neutral side of the style spectrum. On any given day, you’ll find me in black skinnies / grey skinnies / leather skinnies and any type of mohair jumper, striped top or oversized blazer on top. So on days I do feel like making a bold statement, it’s fun to have one extremely outspoken coat that highlights your playful personality. I’d opt for something in a statement shade like baby blue or lime green or go for a monster faux fur in all the colors of the Rainbow.

I hope this was a helpful peek into my brain when it comes to assembling a wardrobe that is both functional and underlines my personal taste. Let me know what you agree or disagree with in the comments.
