How to tigthen a loose hat

So you bought your dream fedora online. You were thinking, surely, you have an altogether average sized head so it will probably fit you, right? Wrong. It turns out to be way too big. But that’s ok, it still looks great so you decided to wear it out the next day. One step out the door, though, and the hat goes flying off down the street like a beautiful arthouse film scene. Well that’s just great, because now you’re carefully planned hat outfit is hat-less.

If this sounds familiar, don’t resort to the swear jar yet – there is a quick and easy way to tighten a loose hat!

You will need:

  1. A pack of adhesive foam door seal from your local hardware store (Bunnings has them here)
  2. A pair of scissors

Yup! That’s it.

To tighten a loose hat, what you need is something to fill up the space between the hat rim that’s too wide, and your abnormally small head (no offence!). Foam door seals are basically a thin strip of sticky foam. It makes the perfect hat filler.

Measure up that foam strip against the inside rim of the hat and cut to length. Remove the backing and stick. So simple!

For hats that are extra big, simply double up the foam strips. If you only need to fill the hat slightly, try sticking the foam to only one half of the rim.
