Inexpensive & Fast China Cabinet Makeover

This past weekend I tried something that I’d been contemplating doing for a while. I gave my china cabinet a makeover! You know how you have these simple ideas that always lead to having to do a lot of other things? Yep. That happened. First, I actually started to see what a disaster my dining room was. We had guitar cases, part of a pet gate and school stuff cluttering it up. To make a change, I was first going to have to clean things up and out! I decided to recruit one son to tote things out of the dining room for relocation, my husband to help with my project and my oldest son to do the dishes using Finish dishwasher cleaner.

I’ll share my dusty dishes shame with you, no problem. LOL! Seriously though, the stack of dishes on the left has been sitting in the corner of my dining room for…I don’t even remember how long. The only place they weren’t dusty is where that pumpkin was sitting. Nice. If I was going for an early haunted house look, my room would be on a good path. I wasn’t, so that stack of dishes went right into the dishwasher. I think Finish did a great job getting them clean don’t you? Check out that non dusty after. Nice!

I wasn’t ready to make any permanent changes to the china cabinet so I decided to make as big a change as I could using the least amount of money and time. I covered the inside with Contact paper! You might be able to do this alone but I say two people make it much easier. First, my husband and I measured the area that we wanted to cover. Next, I cut the Contact paper. Four hands were better than two, especially as I put the paper on the top part of the china cabinet. I applied it in one long strip, (I did all the applying and smoothing) smoothed out the excess with a squeegee (you can use a gift card, credit card, driver’s license, whatever you have) and trimmed the edges with a craft knife. Make a tiny pin hole in any bubbles that you get and smooth them out. If you have any experience applying vinyl, the techniques here are the same with one exception, Contact paper is easier to work with! If you accidentally stick it to itself you can pull it apart and separate it. Ask me know I know? LOL!

I pretty much hate change, even though I have the misconception about myself that I love and accept change easily. So, whenever I make any change in my home…I hate it at first. The best thing about this makeover is that if I never fully embrace the change, I can pull that Contact paper right off and pretend like it never happened. LOL! Well, except there’s this whole blog record of it. Actually, that’s a great thing because I can check photos to see what worked and what didn’t. The other nice thing is, I didn’t buy anything for the makeover except the Contact paper and Finish. All of those dishes were in the bottom of the cabinet. I pulled in those birdhouses from a nearby display I had and voila! Made over!

I still have a ton of things I’d like to do in this room but that’s a start. Next…new flooring, new chairs, some wall art for the sides of the china cabinet and a new chandelier, I think.

I like both of these looks but it’s nice to have a new display!

Want some awesome sparkly dishes? Pick up Finish at Walmart! We use Finish in our house all the time but this is the first time I tried the Power & Free Finish. I really like it! It did a great job! Be sure supervise when letting children handle the product.

Walmart has a Rollback for Finish going until October and it can be paired with a coupon for amazing savings!
