Moroccan Adventures | Sunset on the Dunes

After 10 magical days, it was time to say goodbye to Morocco.

I have to admit, before I went I wasn’t overwhelmed with excitement as with some places I’ve been… That sounds incredibly spoilt, but after going once before and contracting a pretty robust dose of food poisoning, there was an edge of apprehension to my enthusiasm. But, over the course of this trip, I totally fell for the place (and it’s food I’m pleased to say). So much so that every place Jamie and I went we were asking questions about prices of land, how easy was it to build, how long did it take, and generally plotting a plan to runaway to the desert. Do Morocco wrong and you might never want to return. But do it right, and you’ll want to keep going back till you’ve explored every last bit of it….

Essaouira was the perfect place to draw our holiday to a close. I would definitely recommend staying slightly out of the town itself like we did (Baoussala is only a 10 minute drive) so you can combine the sights and smells of Essaouira with the peace and calm of a walled pool and a hammock or two.

We spent our last few days wandering Essaouira, lazing by the Baoussala’s pool, reading on the roof till sundown and riding along the beach (just me for the last one). Baoussala’s lovely host Leah’s husband owns horses on the beach, so it’s really easy to go and spend an hours riding through the dunes on one of his stallions. Probably one for half decent riders – a gallop to the finish line felt pretty inevitable!

We left for the airport after 3 nights in the cocoon of beautiful Baoussala, both promising we’d come back sooner rather than later.

My favourite lunch spot at Baoussala

Taro’s Bar is a must for a drink in Essaouira. Amazing views, good mojitos and a fun atmosphere. Go from here to quirky Italian/Moroccan restaurant Eivissa… Decked out with 60s Mod memorabilia (yes really) it feels like a little slice of Brighton in Morocco. And the food really is delicious. We had the creamiest gnocchi followed by tender organic chicken tagine with cous cous and figs.

Base camp. AKA Baoussala’s roof.
