A New York Minute

“One belongs to New York instantly. One belongs to it as much in five minutes as in five years.” – Thomas Wolfe.

Last week I made a very quick trip to the city for a few meetings & brief stay at my favorite hotel. I always look forward to visiting New York and while the city usually welcomes me with open arms, this trip she welcomed me with a frigid reality check.

I wasn’t able to take my usual run in Central Park, breathe in the blended scent of pretzels and pizza nor could I enjoy walking through the streets of Soho. New York felt distant and cold. She reminded me that life isn’t always as uncomplicated as the beautiful summer and fall seasons can be. I was forced to stay indoors for most of my trip, only venturing out for a few meetings.

But just as I was about to leave, through the dreary winter night, I took a glance out my window to see the radiant lights of the city staring back at me. The streets were still buzzing, the buildings stood proud as ever and there was a sense of calmness that served as a blanket to the city. Per my usual routine, I sat in my windows ledge and spent some time with my favorite place in the world and we fell in love all over again.
