Washi Your Way To Cute! Super Easy Projects for Washi Tape Beginners

hen it comes to crafting I have to admit I am more than a little clumsy. I really want to be one of those awesome people that can paint and sew and just generally make absolutely everything they lay their crafty hands on come out looking perfect but it’s just not meant to be. I’m the sort of person that trips over his own feet, smashes into tables, and drops almost everything on a daily basis so basically when ever I sit down to make something it has to be something incredibly simple and something that can be easily fixed when it inevitably goes wrong – and that is why I absolutely love working with washi tape!

What is washi tape?

Washi tape is a great product for customising most things it originated in Japan and is basically a decorative paper tape. This tape can be cut, or simply torn from the strip and can literally be stuck to just about anything and is super easy to remove if you’ve made a mistake or have simply just changed your mind.

Where to buy washi tape?

Washi tape is a really popular product in the craft and scrapbooking world so there is literally no end of stockists, you will find everything from incredibly cute designs from brands like Sanrio and San-x to more subdued traditional patters or just plain tapes in various colours. The best places to start your washi collection are Etsy, Amazon Japan and washitape.co.uk but you can find washi tape in various physical stores as well such as Paperchase and Hobbycraft.

Washi tape your computer!

This is a super easy project to get your teeth into and was one of the first things I did when I started getting into using washi tape to customise things. For my iMac I covered most of the exposed metal parts with rows of polka dot tape and then used a craft scalpel to very carefully cut away the parts that were covering the apple logo and around the screen edges. It didn’t take long at all and people always comment on how it looks.

Washi tape your switches!

Light switches and plug sockets are another great way to add washi tape designs to your home, they really add a personalised element to a room and are just as easy to do as a computer or laptop. For light switches simply stick rows of tape over the switch face and then use your craft scalpel to neaten up the edges and cut around the switch itself.

Washi tape your phone case!

A great way to create your own custom phone case is by simply taping over your old one or buying a plain case and jazzing it up with tape, you can cover the entire thing in a design tape if you want or you could just use the tape to add stripes of a colour or a design, get creative with it! The best thing about this is you can just peel the tape off when it gets dirty or when you fancy a chance and pretty much have a brand new phone case every single week!

Washi tape your walls!

Washi tape comes in really handy around the home, especially if you rent and find you can’t really go to crazy with the decorating. Washi tape is absolutely fine to use on walls and will often peel straight off without leaving any marks behind. You can use the tape to put up pictures or posters, or if you’re feeling especially creative you could even create interesting geometric patterns with the tape.

Washi tape your gifts!

Nothing beats adding a touch of personality to a gift you’re giving someone and absolutely everyone loves a brown paper package, spruce up that brown paper with a little bit of tape to give it that extra made by hand look. You can also use washi tape to decorate envelopes and letters to friends, so cute!
