Pastel Palette

This isn’t the kind of room that normally catches my eye and makes me go “OOOOOH!” but that’s exactly what I did when I saw this.

It’s a little more formal than my usual fare, but it’s nice to be fancy sometimes. If I had a living room (as opposed to our family room with the projector and the coffee table that I put my feet on), it would probably look like this. This is a room where you definitely don’t put your footsies on the furniture. Tea drinking and book discussing are more appropriate, provided you don’t dribble any of it on that awesome rug.

You know where I’m going with this. Here’s what we need to get my favorite pastel color palette in our own cribs.

sofa // lamp // painting // tables // pillows // wall color // ceiling light // rug // chair

>> Let’s talk seating! That sofa is a great backdrop for a room like this. It’s darker and grounds the space, while also fading into the background and letting all of the snazzy details shine. Like the chair. That chair is a delight and although I couldn’t find a reasonably affordable teal and gold version that existed in the wild, that’s what spray paint is for.

>> It looks like these hex tables from West Elm are the ones used in the original picture except the legs were painted gold. (Spray paint again! Haaaaay!) That makes me like them even more because the gold contrasts better with the gray-ish marble tops.

>> Finding a lavender rug with a large scale geometric pattern was TRICKY, but I think this one works even if it’s not an exact match. It’s also kind of a steal at $252 for a 5×8–and that’s not even a sale price. Boo ya.

>> Is it dorky that I’m excited because there are two types of lighting in here? That floor lamp is just a larger version of one for a desk (which makes me want it, obviously) and the crystal ceiling mount is so lovely. It’s pretty anyway, but think about how dazzling it will be when the bulb is lit.

>> As for the accessories, the painting is a little splurge-y at $400, but it’s also four feet square and for something that large the price is actually pretty good. If you want to make one yourself, you could try to find a big painting at a thrift store and just go over it with a new design. The pillows, meanwhile, are from Etsy and I want to rub my face all over them. That pattern is just fierce.

>> One of my favorite details of the space is the barely blue walls. Normally you see white or wood for wall panel molding like that, but the blue is a breath of fresh air. It’s a nice little twist that works with the other modern bits in the room (the hex tables, for example). The color I picked is Icy Blue from Ben Moore and I might only get it tinted to about 75% to keep it really airy feeling.

Basically, this makes me think I could work some more pastels into the house and not feel like I was living in the middle of an Easter basket. How do you like this color scheme? Do you already have pastels in your house and you’re wondering what took me so long? What’s your favorite thing here?
