WHO AM I: RAPPER FINDS HIS ROOTS

Rapper Nas received more than he bargained for when he signed up to participate in the Henry Louis Gates TV series Finding Your Roots. Nas expected to find out things about his grandparents and that it, but when a 1859 bill of sale resurfaced Nas didn’t know how to react. Nas was presented with a bill of sale for his third great-grandmother Pocahontas to a Southern slaveholder.

In an interview with the NY Daily News Nas said that when he saw the bill of sale, he had to stop and deal with that for a moment. This is a sale of a human being. This was business here in this country.

The PBS series Finding Your Roots returns on September 23.
