Puur Haken Doily

Back from a lovely trip to Sweden, it’s hard to adjust to the normal daily life rhythm again. We enjoyed the beautiful Indian Summer warmth and colours, quiet woods and lakes, and yes some crochet too.

Lately I have been proudly enjoying all the pictures on your blogs, Instagram feeds and Facebook pages with items you made based on patterns from my crochet book Puur Haken. I am impressed with the colour combinations you come up with, the speed with which you work up the shawls and doilies, cowls and rugs.

In Sweden I got tempted to have a little play with the Puur Haken doily pattern myself. Rugs made of strips of fabric, rag rugs, are very common in Sweden so I decided to make some. I brought a few balls of Hoooked Zpagetti with me to the lake one day, and made a ‘his’ and ‘hers’ bedside floor mat. Really, I could sit there forever enjoying the view, couldn’t you?

The pattern is from my book and I decided to use 2 instead of 3 colours for these ones. The white one is exactly the same pattern as the little ones from the book. For the dark one I decided to skip the last row.

They are huge. I mean, they are a regular size floor mat for your bathroom, beside your bed or so, but boy they are giant compared to the original doilies haha! The originals have a diameter of 17 cm/7 inches, these giants are 70 cm/28 inches in the round. I love how the same pattern gives such a different result when worked with another yarn and hook size.

If you’d like to make a giant floor mat doily yourself, this is what you need: one ball of regular Zpagetti for the main part, one Medium ball one for contrasting centre and edging, and hook size 12 mm. I choose uni coloured yarn for the main part, and print for the contrasting edge. The pattern can be found in my book Puur Haken.

And pssst… the doilies would make for perfect Sinterklaas or Christmas gifts too…
