Tissue Paper Collage Cannisters
Last week at Crafting A Future, I taught my 1st and 2nd grade girls how to make beautiful collages with torn tissue paper, and diluted glue. When they returned this week, I surprised them each with a festive cannister made from a recycled oatmeal can and their very own artwork. And of course, this is a kid's craft that is just in time for Purim, as these artful cannisters can certainly be used for mishloach manot gift baskets. If you're lucky enough to have saved all of your oatmeal cans, as I clearly have, you can whip up a bunch!
Of course, cannisters, or even regular cans decorated with sheets of tissue paper collage also make great pencil holders, or even little planters!
Truthfully, the collages the girls created were great as is, but I knew they'd appreciate their work more if we used it to make something useful.
You'll Need:
- recycled oatmeal cans with covers, or any can though preferably un-ridged
- cardstock
- tissue paper
- white glue
- paint brushes
- hot glue (for adults only)
How To: Dilute white glue with water to make it just runny enough that it can be "painted" with a paint brush. Apply glue to small areas of paper, lay torn pieces of tissue paper onto glue, and then smooth with the paint brush. Cover the entire sheet of paper, and set aside to dry. Once dry, go over entire sheet with another coat of diluted glue.
To cover can, measure height of can and cut paper accordingly. Our paper was not long enough to go around the entire can, so I had to attach a second small piece from the leftovers to fill a gap. Apply hot glue to the vertical edges of the paper, and apply to can. Hot glue adds dimension, which is not desirable, unless using a ridged can, in which case filling the ridges with hot glue might actually enable a smoother result. Enjoy!
