Tredwell’s

Tredwell’s is the latest restaurant opening from Marcus Wareing restaurants and is a slightly different set up of that of Marcus’s Gilbert Scott restaurant. Tredwell’s is a much more relaxed and informal atmosphere and is based in Seven Dials which if you are unfamiliar with the area is in the heart of the theatre district and right next to Covent Garden. Last week Danny and I were invited down to try out the menu for dinner.

As soon as you step inside Tredwell’s you know it’s the perfect destination for food this winter, it’s cosy and warm atmosphere definitely feels like it should have a burning log fire as the smell of freshly made mulled wine fills the room. It was however much smaller than I had anticipated, the ground floor has about 6 booths and a few tables, with the bar lining the wall, but there is also an upper mezzanine floor and a basement which I never saw but imagine this to have more space.

We started off our dinner with a couple of signature cocktails which are designed to complement the food menu. I chose ‘Down the Apples & Pears’ which was Belvedere Vodka, apple, pear, elderflower and thyme. Absolutely delicious and really interesting to learn about the details behind the drink, the fruit is dehydrated in the bar which turns the apple into a sweet more than just a garnish. I would come back to Tredwell’s just for this cocktail alone it was so good! Danny tried the ‘New Fashioned’ with rye whiskey, marmalade and bitters which he said was a good twist on an old fashioned cocktail.

For starters we chose the chicken liver mousse with bacon jam and toast and also the chargrilled chicken with peanut sauce and chutney to share between us. The chicken liver mousse was very nice and lightly whipped and I liked the extra addition of bacon jam. The bread was slightly too charred for my liking so I didn’t enjoy this as much as I thought I would. The chicken however was lovely, very succulent and juicy.

As we chose our mains we also decided on a wine to go with the food. I decided on the slow cooked pork belly with apple sauce and nutmeg and a glass of ‘Grüner Veltliner, Weingut Krems Weinzierlberg Stadt Krems, Austria 2012′ which was a white Austrian wine, I never really opt for an Austrian wine but thought I would give it a try and it was lovely. The pork belly was cooked extremely well and the apple and nutmeg just helped add to the flavour. Danny had the rib eye steak with pepper sauce, cooked medium and with a glass of ‘Merlot, Lyeth, California, USA 2012′. The rib-eye was cooked chargrilled so I was glad I didn’t order this one as I’m not that keen on when it’s cooked like that but Danny really liked it and said the sauce was a really good addition. We also shared a portion of moreish fries and sweet potato chips.

Lastly it was time for dessert. I had been looking forward to trying the coconut mousse which I had my eye on when I first looked at the menu. The mousse came with pineapple and lime and when it was brought out by the waiter it completely wasn’t what I expected, I think in my head I imagined the mousse and pineapple on the side but there was a lot of pineapple on the underside of the mousse. The mousse was very light however and easy to eat. Danny had the special which was a custard tart that even the Queen has enjoyed at one point. This was really delicious and was a bit jealous I hadn’t ordered that!

After dinner we went for a walk into Covent Garden to burn off all that food and bumped into the amazing and really tall Christmas tree in the centre of the square!
