If you're up on your spring 2014 fashion trends, then you already know that 1990s styles, like crop tops and overalls, are backkkkkk. Gwyneth Paltrow has already declared that she will spend the entire season in overalls, which she apparently never stopped sporting. And who came blame her? Comfortable and easy-to-wear, overalls are the epitome of casual dressing in America and have been for decades.
Here's a quick history: Overalls have been a staple of American work wear since the early twentieth century, and of fashionable dress since the 1960s. In the 1980s, the American-born, Paris-based fashion designer Patrick Kelly adopted oversized overalls as his personal uniform. (Learn more about that here.) Kelly was known for sporting Liberty overalls, of which he reputedly owned more than 100 pairs. He also styled them into cocktail dresses and full-length gowns for his eponymous label. Fashionable overalls, indeed.
By the 1990s, overalls slimmed down, and relaxed-fit styles were standard daywear, especially for scrawny kids like my younger sister. Too skinny to fit into regular pants, she owned about two dozen pairs of Gap overalls in printed and washed denims and colored cotton velvets. Needless to say, I was totally jealous of her wardrobe.
Now that overalls are back, I am going to indulge my childhood fashion craving with today's skinny and tapered styles, starting with this updated classic from BLANKKNYC.
