Apple Picking in Hudson Valley

One fall day, I had a hankering for a mini adventure outside of New York City. L and I got into the car, and before we knew it, we were at Fishkill Farms in the Hudson Valley.

What’s at Fishkill Farms?

Apple trees, duh. But also, vegetable, flower, and herb gardens full of all sorts of treasures. The farm general store is also worth perusing. It’s full of freshly-picked produce (if you’re too lazy to pick your own), jams, pies, and a whole boatload of other food products that are locally-made or made from homegrown goods.

If nothing else, definitely make sure to try the sugar-coated apple cider donuts! They’re pretty perfect: fluffy, not too sweet, and very apple-y.

Pricing

The farm is quite large, so you’ll probably want to drive your car in to the orchard area and park near where you plan to pick. Orchard admission is $5/car or $1/walk-in.

Fishkill Farms runs on a “pay for what you pick” policy, so when you enter the orchard, you’ll be given two bags you can use. One is a quarter bushel bag, and the other is a half bushel bag. The quarter bushel bag held quite a lot of apples, so we stuck with that one. The bags come with different flat rates, so make sure to fill them all the way up to the black line (top) since you’ll be charged the flat rate anyway. The quarter bushel bag is $20 and the half bushel bag is $30.

Apple Types

When we went, only the Golden Delicious apples were available for picking. The variety available for picking changes, so you should use this schedule to figure out what apples will be available when you want to go.

Happy picking!
