Stall Profile: Kiss Create

Recreate. Revive. Reclaim.

Meet Amanda Kitchen, of Kiss Create, a long time TVM stall peddling painted and up-cycled vintage furniture and homewares.

Tell us about how and when your label was created?

I have created and worked with design for the last 16 years working for myself. My first business dizzi dezine was online designer wedding stationery. I needed a new creative outlet and sold dizzi and started Kiss Create. I had been painting furniture for my own home and family from my early 20’s and had always had a passion for colours and styling. I have also had an obsession with vintage since I was a young girl. I am a keen collector and don’t like to throw away things that can be re-used. So with my loves of vintage, painting and recycling I came up with Kiss Create.

What pieces are included within your range?

My range is forever changing depending on my finds. Each piece is unique. I do always have my old windows that I have upcycled into photo frames as well as a dresser each market, which is a favorite of mine to do. Every woman and girl needs a Kiss Create dresser. My door tables with 50’s legs and chairs are also proving popular.

What is your creative background?

I have always loved photography and anything creative. I created an online DIY stationery mega store for brides as well as designing a new range of wedding stationery each year. I worked with Cosmo bride and other bridal magazines as well as won awards while in the wedding business.

Where is the label designed and made?

I work from home surrounded by a rainforest with lots of space and nature. When I find a piece of furniture I normally have a vision of how I would like it to be after the makeover.

Sometimes I turn off that path and it ends up being something totally different. I love being able to work in my own creative space away from the hustle and bustle.

What inspires you?

Ohhh so much. The internet is an amazing tool as well as home magazines. I am always looking at old buildings and colours as well as my travels through Europe & Africa. I love mixing new colours and playing around with different techniques. I am forever learning.

Latest collection consists of?

I have an amazing Barn Door Table with benches made from another door as well as a large sized coffee table made from a bed base with 4 drawers and the top being old tounge and groove. I love these one off unique pieces.

Of course there will be retro and mid-century pieces as well as kids & nursery furniture.

What’s on your mood board?

Colours, painting techniques, samples of collected vintage wallpapers, Styling tips, & photos.

What’s your creative space like?

I am lucky to have a few spaces to work in. I have my outdoor studio which is in a beautiful rainforest filled with birds and wallabies. I also have a few verandas to work on if the weather is not too good as well as my workshop and storage area which is where I have all my wonderful paint, tools and stock. There is my photography studio where I take all the pictures of my makeovers as well as my office .

What music do you listen to while designing/creating?

I have JJJ playing in my workshop all the time. At the moment I am loving Dan Sultan, first Aid Kit, Angus & Julia Stone and some oldies Rodriguiz, Xavier Rudd & Ben Harper.

A day in the life of you consists of?

Visiting my salvage yards, Auctions, Op shops and Collectors I buy from to pick up stock.

Cleaning, sanding, painting & distressing furniture as well as accessories. Styling and photographing the refreshed pieces. Working on my blog/website and uploading daily photos on Facebook and Instagram. Quoting and getting in touch with my lovely customers that have requested me to paint their furniture. I also try and fit in custom paint jobs where I go to my customers house to paint their furniture.

Favourite TVM stall (besides yours of course)?

So many, all of them. I Love Crystal Creek Flowers as each market day I buy flowers for different vases or bottles I am using for styling on the day. All the vintage stalls of course are fave’s. Love the coffee and juice guys and the music is always amazing. I am also loving the fashion for both me and my 4 daughters.

Favourite reads/blogs?

Real Living magazine. A couple of blogs I have been following at the moment is Vintage Revivals & Coco & Kelley

What are we likely to find you wearing on market day? Any favourite labels?

I am a vintage label lover so whatever label I can find is my favorite. I love the Village Market rack sales.

What are your plans for the remainder of 2014 and beyond?

I now have an amazing collector that I am working with who finds me the most amazing retro & mid century pieces.

I am forever playing around with new techniques and colours. I will be releasing some more pieces using wallpaper as well as some metallic colours.
There will also be some amazing upcycled furniture using quality pieces and fine workmanship. Exciting times.

Why TVM?
It’s the best market of course. I love that it is a boutique market and so many amazing stalls. It’s wonderful to be working with other creative people and there is so much well chosen talent.

TVM are so professional and amazing with marketing and design.

What do you love most about attending TVM?

The vibe and music is always good. Lots of lovely people both stall holders and customers. I love that I can share my passion with others. x
