Outfit Post: Crutches

Any day now Vogue is going to declare what I already know: This season’s hottest accessory is a pair of crutches. No outfit is complete without them.

I’ve been in a wheelchair since I got out of the hospital at the end of September, and I was actually really looking forward to graduating to crutches. But that’s because I was using Steven as an example, and since the day after doctors put a metal rod in his femur, he’s been able to bear weight on his broken leg. So he’s had quite a bit of mobility from the beginning. On Friday when I finally got the okay to crutch around, it was with the instruction that I still can’t put any weight on my left leg. Despite the fact that the bones are held together with three 5-inch long stainless steel screws, the fractures in my pelvis still need more time to heal. So my hopes of finally being able to go up and down stairs (so I can reach my clothes and craft supplies), were dashed for now. In a few weeks I’ll be able to start doing weight-bearing exercises, but until then the wheelchair is still my primary mode of movement. I know I shouldn’t complain because I could’ve been injured even more seriously, and been confined to a wheelchair for the rest of my life, but I’m really looking forward to being able to walk again. Don’t take it for granted.
Believe it or not, I’m actually trying to look cheerful here.
