Patricia's Ring

Patricia by Patricia Glasco
Readers first met Patricia in my Long Tall Sally post of April 28, 2014.

Because some of her fingers are separate, I wanted Patricia to wear at least one ring. Initially, I thought an adjustable child's ring or perhaps a toe ring made for an adult would work. Since I had been unable to find just the right ring for Patricia, I decided to make a ring using copper wire that I keep on hand.

I have been a keyboarder for over 40 years. As a result of the repetitive motion this task places on my fingers and wrists, I developed carpal tunnel symptoms some 10 years ago. These symptoms include numbness, tingling, and pain of my index fingers and wrists. The ergonomic keyboard I have used since the onset alleviated the symptoms, but what really has helped is pure copper.

Copper bracelets and my home made finger spirals made from pure copper wire
I began constantly wearing copper bracelets, at least two on each wrist, as well as wire spirals on the affected fingers when keyboarding. The finger spirals are made from pure cooper wire. I purchased several yards of it from Home Depot years ago.

Finger spiral -- my home made miracle cure for finger pain, numbness, and tingling
I must have looked like Edward Scissorhands with the spiral wire on my finger while keyboarding, but it served the intended purpose of easing and eventually eliminating the finger pain, numbness, and tingling. I no longer wear these spiral finger "adornments," but I keep them and the extra copper wire on hand, just in case. I still constantly wear my copper bracelets, however, and every now and then a brief soak in catchup gives them a new penny gleam.

While Patricia does not suffer from numbness, pain, or tingling in any of her fingers, I used some of my copper wire to fashion a ring for her index finger. Just as I would wrap a piece of the copper around my finger, I did the same with Patricia's finger to make an adjustable ring. The excess was cut with scissors. I curved the ends around to create ovals.

I am pleased with the result.
