Motel Rocks

BTS @ LFW SS15

Fashion photographer Holly McGlynn was lucky enough to be working backstage @ London Fashion Week this season and has given us a peek into the madness and glamourouz mayhem that lies behind those glossy black and white walls!

“At fashion week I tend to shy away from anything too showy, but still want to look my best of course, so I opted for some monochrome pieces from Motel. I love the sheer checked details on both pieces and the contrast of the Himalayan Tight Skirt and oversized Bobtail Shirt Dress. I threw a vintage gingham check monochrome dress over the skirt just to add some layers and more texture.”

“I was shooting backstage at J. JS Lee at 7.30 a.m. Friday morning so bowed out of the party just before midnight to get some beauty sleep. Friday was my busiest day at fashion week, running across town to shoot at different shows and shooting street style for various clients in between. So for my outfit choice, comfort was absolutely key. I wore my new favourite sweatshirt from Motel, the Cocoon Sweatshirt in Tango Velour. I love the cocoon shape, soft feel and bright colour. I teamed this with a pair of bouclé shorts and my blue and orange hologram Nikes. Flat shoes are essential for a photographer at fashion week! As it turned out, it was 21 degrees on Friday and a velour sweatshirt was not an ideal wardrobe decision!!”

“I was shooting backstage at J JS Lee and Amanda Wakeley on Friday. Backstage is always a bit crazy with everyone fighting for space but there’s a real feeling of community, that everyone is working as hard as possible to make the show amazing. J JS Lee’s summer collection was a series of loose tailoring with a sporty edge, my favourite being the lawn green tennis dress – beautiful. Nails were done by Orly and replicated a delicate surgery operation as the team used tweezers to apply minuscule pieces of material to create a tiny 3D flower on the end of each white nail. Amanda Wakeley’s all white SS15 collection was breathtaking; a perfect balance between structure and flow; tailoring, casual, and glamour worked together harmoniously.”

“The highlight of my fashion week however was the Matthew Williamson show. Matthew’s 70’s inspired collection was an extravaganza of print, bright colours, 70’s silhouettes which brought Studio 54 glamour to mind. The hibiscus flower used in Matthew’s prints was the main reference point for the make up, devised by none other than make-up guru Charlotte Tilbury. Deep purples around the eyes and fresh dewy skin tied the whole look together. And the hair? Well with such a 70’s inspired collection none other that Farah Fawcett would seem to serve as inspiration. Hair was big and bouncy and fabulous, worthy of a Charlie’s Angel.”

“I took my seat at the show at the very last minute but who followed moments later to sit directly in front of me?! Only the supremely fabulous Nicole Scherzinger, who made a joke about how tiny a bum you needed to sit on the seats (Matthew’s show was of course at full capacity). Nicole went backstage after the show to congratulate Matthew and I took a picture, of course! An opportunity too good to miss.”

“After all the late nights, early starts, running around and general excitement, I’ve managed to come down with a bout of fashion flu…but I still can’t wait to do it all over again next season!”
