MKTO; the #thankyoutour – Melbourne, 2014 – the Meet & Greet experience review

Time has flown so much, and I’ve been so busy I neglected to tell you I kinda met my recent musical crushes MKTO…
It happened so fast!

I felt like I had to write about the experience of the meet & greet experience, forking out extra dollars for the privilege.
MKTO were in town. Headlining for the first time (as they’d been supporting Emblem 3 in the US). Australia has been one of their best markets. Their album was released here a couple of months before their own homeland!

Needless to say, I’ve been listening to their self titled debut from first track to last.. and I just needed to see them.
Since I hadn’t been to a show since Mariah (MARIAH!) I went all out and paid for the meet & greet. Why not! When in Rome!

Look, I’m not sure I’d do it again…(the VIP experience)

I’m not sure if it was the company organising it (LiveNation) but, the ‘meet and greet’ portion of the pre-show was so almightily brief, I was in a daze as Tony and Malcolm hugged me, click went the professional photographer – there was no time, NO time given for a conversation. A chat. There just wasn’t. It was a conveyor belt. We weren’t allowed to use our phones, to try and get a selfie. And we were told beforehand no time to sign. Really? Really? Surely there were some male fans that might not have been happy with a hug, and you know, wanted a signature.

And the ‘goodie bag’. Um. A cloth MKTO bag. A lanyard. (A used one by the looks of it…) Sigh.

There was an awesome accoustic set beforehand, and a Q & A which entailed time for THREE questions, where we had the BEST position (to take the photos you see here). I incorrectly assumed we’d at least be in the vicinity for paying such an amount in the first place. Nope – the extra money was just for the privilege of meeting the band but not for the best seats in the house. This might have been the bigger bug-bear – shouldn’t the 100 allocated meet and greet ticket holders be kept aside the 100 best seats? Thankfully there was nobody tall in front of me (the first thing I worry about at concerts) and we had a good crowd in general but the visibility wasn’t great, and the fact that for 30 minutes at the pre-show we had the most superb seats – it really was a tease.

(Bear in mind, I’m just reviewing the ‘meet and greet’ experience – not the MKTO show itself) Tony and Malcolm, in their terms… TURNT IT UP!

But I have to admit; the ‘vanilla’ experience of the meet & greet did detract from the show itself I hate to admit, and just how rushed it was meant I won’t be forking out those dollars again in the future. Next time I’ll make sure I buy tickets asap and assure myself of the best position possible.

This was also my FIRST VIP ‘extra’ concert experience. Have you had any disappointing concert experiences? Share!
