The Edit: Classic Baby Shower Presents

Baby showers have been on my mind lately (no, I’m not having a fourth… just yet). Like me, I’m sure you’ve been to your fair share or possibly had one, two or three thrown in your honour. A baby shower is also the kind of celebration that is always on the horizon, either for a friend or colleague or a relative. With that in mind – and having two that I need to shop for ASAP – here’s a quick round-up of some of the gifts that I’ve received in the past that have stood the test of time, or things that I currently use that I wouldn’t hesitate to give as pressies.

Sophie The Giraffe needs no introduction. This famous, award-winning toy is made from non-toxic, sustainable rubber and is a favourite of celebri-tots the world over. All my babies have had one, and the littlest of my lot loves chomping on his – bonus points for when he makes her squeak. Just a tip: keep it away from the dog who might think it’s Christmas/Chanukah come early!

I have always loved the idea of giving (and receiving) really special books that will last a lifetime as a present for a child, and always mark my children’s first birthdays with a hardcover of a classic. It doesn’t get more timeless than Peter Rabbit, and the cover is a gorgeous visual addition to a nursery or play room.

Simple and colourful, and made with sustainable wood and non-toxic paint, what’s not to love about this Moko rainbow stacking puzzle. Also fab to leave on display.

I’ve never been a big swaddler myself, but am a breastfeed-on-demand type of mom, which means I’m often out and about when the little one wants a drink. These chic Aden Anais muslin blankets are lightweight, easy to wash and the most amazing multitaskers – from covering baby’s pram to covering up your ta-tas when it’s time for a feed in public.

I just cannot get enough of Cotton On Kids. I am a serial shopper and I think I might be developing a bit of a problem… Luckily their prices are really good and the quality of their babywear amazing. I especially adore their babygrows, leggings and the cute assortment of printed bibs.

I still have my Bunnykins Royal Doulton set from when I was an infant, and received this lovely bowl as part of a beautifully packaged gift set when my youngest was born. It was from Spilhaus.

Naartjie is another favourite for newborn and baby clothes. And a gift card makes a fab option for mamas who have not found out their baby’s gender. I always prefer to club in with a few friends when buying a gift voucher.

These are my ultimate faves for my baba’s booty. Kiehl’s Baby Cream (and their Baby Shampoo) is just dreamy and is available from Edgars Sandton and Canal Walk stores. The Ladybird Baby balm is made locally by Soylites and can be found at lots of health stores (or check their site). It’s brilliant to put in your handbag for any sorts of sore bum/dry skin emergencies. And my ultimate product is Badger Baby Balm. I’ve used it from day one of my little boy’s existence to keep his bum from getting sore, for dry skin, cradle cap and on my own dry bits and lips. It is the best and I just wish it had been available when the older two were babies!

And finally, the best plush toy in the world (in my humble opinion). This is Bashful Bunny in beige from Jellycat, who do the most amazing assortment of cuddle toys in all sorts of cute colours and designs. Bashful was the first plush toy that I bought my now six year old, and let me tell you it’s been through the wringer. It’s still his favourite thing to sleep with and each subsequent child has one of their own that they love and adore.

What has been your all-time favourite baby shower pressie? I’d love to know.
