Meet Lettice…

On Friday afternoon Remy and I drove north to meet our new sausage, Lettice, Letty for short. She’s a miniature smooth red Dachshund, a year old and weighing just 3,7kg (about 8lbs). Although she is verrree long.

We’ve always loved the name Lettice, and she has excellent name forebearers, two Lettices in Agatha Christie and extraordinary Lettice Curtis, the WWII pilot. A big name inheritance for a tiny doglet.

She has a little separation anxiety, a very sausage trait and, so far, only really wants to snuggle in or on my bed with me.

We have re-homed Lettice, after seeing her on a Dachshunds Needing Homes board online. She was put up for a new home by a breeder because, at a year old, it was clear she wasn’t growing any bigger, and she was too small to have puppies. (She barely meets the weight criteria for a miniature Dachshund).

Unfortunately not everyone felt that way – the only other potential re-homer would have seen her being shipped off to Germany, where she would have ended up producing puppies, as she would be classed as a kaninchen (German for “rabbit”), a size of Dachsie that is not officially recognised in the US or UK.

So she has found a new home with us, and we are very happy to have her. (And, regardless of her illustrious Kennel Club pedigree, she is being spayed once she comes into season.)

On Saturday she went to Highgate with us to buy a new harness at The Hair of the Dog, before dropping in to wish godson no 1 a very happy birthday. On the way home we had a quick walk (sit) in Primrose Hill

On Sunday morning we went to Regents Park with both sausages for some acclimatisation.

Even Posetta Baddog likes her (remains unmoved). Which is a miracle in itself.

She visited our vet this evening – Village Vets in Belsize Park – and was pronounced fit and well. So now we just need to get her microchipped, courtesy of Dogs Trust, at one of their free microchipping events.
