Bye Bye Brassy Highlights: John Frieda Sheer Blonde Colour Renew Shampoo and Conditioner Review

I did something crazy a month ago: I started using a line of hair products for blondes. No, I haven’t gone cray cray. Yes, I know that I’m still a brunette. Thing is, my new highlights were looking orange, so I looked for solutions to lift the brassiness.

Enter John Frieda Sheer Blonde Colour Renew Tone Correcting Shampoo and Conditioner. The entire Sheer Blonde line by John Frieda is really popular with blondes, garnering many rave reviews all over the blogosphere. As a brunette, I can’t help but get curious if it will work on my light brown highlights. I wanted to ditch the coppery orange highlights and achieve a nice golden “bronde.”

There are many different products in the Sheer Blonde line, so here’s a guide on how to pick the right products for you.

• For colour-treated blondes: Everlasting Blonde Colour Preserving line.
• For highlighted or natural blondes: Highlight Activating line.
• For achieving a lighter blonde: Go Blonder Lightening line.
• For neutralizing brassy tones: Colour Renew Tone Correcting line.

Oh yeah, the shampoo and conditioner are blue-purple! Blue-purple is on the opposite end of the colour wheel as yellow-orange. These are the yellow-orange tones that the Colour Renew line is meant to cancel out with regular use.

When using the Colour Renew Tone Correcting duo, results are supposed to be apparent in as little as 3 washes. For me, I saw results 2 weeks after I used it regularly. After two weeks, I’ve been alternating the shampoo with the Everlasting Blonde Colour Preserving Shampoo, because I find the Colour Renew shampoo can be quite drying to my hair.

Besides the apparent colour results, as a shampoo and conditioner, I think the Sheer Blonde Colour Renew duo is just okay. The scent of the shampoo is lemony, and the conditioner’s scent is pretty standard for a drugstore conditioner. Nothing groundbreaking. I also noticed that my roots feel a tad bit greasier than usual, so I wouldn’t use them everyday. Now that I have my desired colour, I think I’ll continue to use Sheer Blonde after every 3 washes.

This duo has saved me a trip back to the salon to tone my highlights. Saving money is always a plus in my book.
