Sina

I’ve never been one for taking up embroidery as a hobby, but I have always been fascinated by the beauty of it, as someone like me can only imagine the time and skill that goes into making these fine pieces of work. Therefore my experience is that whenever I wear something that has intricate hand-embroidered detail on it, I instantly feel glamourous. This is because I know that a large amount of effort and creativity has gone into one garment. I’ve even caught myself staring (for ages) at a collection of colourful hand-embroidered skirts, dresses and capes from Greece that my Grandmother passed down to me, and the pair of embroidered pumps with accents of tiny sequins and African beads that I bought from a local market. Yet, I’ve never seen something quite like Yumiko Arimoto‘s “Sina” designs. The happy colours that she uses and the unusual photographs that she has taken make her choice of presenting her work an interesting experience indeed. The young Japanese designer has opened up my eyes to the fact that embroidery is an art form, and I’m sure that through her workshops of teaching embroidery skills, she has inspired many others too.
