This season, gold features in designer collections in a manner very different from how it dominated runways and wardrobes in Fall 2011, when it was all about metallic baroque. Gold now falls on the edgier end of the style spectrum, giving off a sense of grungy opulence. It calls to mind an image of a fallen aristocracy, defiant of its new status yet still surrounded by an air of prestige and inherited sophistication.
