Cape Verde – Boa Vista
Azuurblauwe zee, witte golven, gouden stranden en helderblauwe lucht. Het lijkt een droom, toch ben ik er geweest: Kaapverdië. Een weekje zalig niets doen op Boa Vista, het meest oostelijk gelegen eiland van het land. We hadden het nodig: eten, slapen, lezen (en een klein beetje cultuur). Maar wat is er nu te zien op het eiland? Is het de moeite? En wie kan dit paradijs beter vermijden?
Azure sea, white waves, golden beaches and a clear blue sky. It seems like a dream, yet I have been there: Cape Verde. A week of doing nothing on Boa Vista, the easternmost island of the country. We needed: food, sleep, read, repeat (and a little bit of culture). But what is there to see on the island? Is it worth the trip? And who should avoid this paradise?
Wil je een week lang cultuur opsnuiven of elke dag nacht tot in de vroege uurtjes uitgaan: sla dit deel van de wereld dan netjes over. Er staan momenteel een 3-tal grote hotels op het eiland, en een handvol kleinere B&B’s en te huren appartementen. Wat wil zeggen: er zijn toeristen, maar ze lopen de dorpjes en stranden niet plat. Wat binnen 10 jaar waarschijnlijk wél het geval zal zijn. Inwoners die net iets te opdringerig zijn (wij vonden het erger dan in landen à la Turkije en Egypte) en heel wat armoede. Maar ook huisjes met fel gekleurde muren (hallo Caraïbische invloeden), de mooiste stranden ter wereld (Santa Monica beach staat op nummer 5 in de wereldranglijst), de leukste beach bars ooit, de meest verlaten duinen met prachtige uitzichten, en mensen die 24/24 pure gelukzaligheid uitstralen.
Want a weeklong culture or party all day/night? Skip this part of the world. Currently, there are about 3 large hotels on the island, and a handful of smaller B&B’s and apartments to rent. Read: there are tourists, but they almost don’t see them. Give it another 10 years, and the villages will be crowded with tourists. The residents are just a little too intrusive (we thought it was worse than in countries à la Turkey and Egypt), and a lot of poverty. But also: houses with brightly coloured walls (hello Caribbean influences), the most beautiful beaches in the world (Santa Monica beach is number 5 in the world), the best beach bars ever, the most deserted dunes with beautiful views, and people who are happy 24/24, 7/7.
Het eiland heeft veel weg van een huwelijk tussen het Afrikaanse continent en het Caraïbisch gebied. Een must-see volgens Lonely Planet. Maar boek liever nog vandaag dan morgen, want ik vrees dat de ketens het eiland zullen inpalmen binnen enkele jaren (er komt een heus resort op dat 5de mooiste strand ter wereld = schande!). Het RIU Touareg heeft zich gevestigd op een broedplaats van schildpadden. Ook schande. Daarom kozen we voor het hotel aan de andere kant van het eiland: het RIU Karamboa. Een All-in formule, propere kamers, vriendelijk personeel, een leuk zwembad en lekker eten. Wat wil een mens nog meer?
The island is much like a marriage between the African continent and the Caribbean area. A must-see according to Lonely Planet. But book today, not tomorrow, because I fear that the island will be covered with hotels in a few years (they are planning a big ass resort on the 5th best beach in the world = disgrace). The RIU Touareg has established their hotel on a breeding ground for turtles. Shame, shame, shame! That is why we chose the hotel on the other side of the island: the RIU Karamboa. An All-in formula, clean rooms, friendly staff, nice pool and good food. What do we want more?
Op een halve dag kan je te voet naar Sal Rei, de hoofdstad van het eiland. Een tussenstop bij Beach Bar Morabeza én eentje op het hoogste punt van de duin tussen Morabeza en Sal Rei (uren kan je daar zitten zonder één toerist te zien). We deden ook een full day island tour met Giggling Gecko (Engelstalig), ontdekt dankzij TripAdvisor. Een relaxte sfeer en je ziet alles wat het eiland te bieden heeft. En dat is meer dan vulkanische grond. Van stranden, over woestijn, tot bossen van palmbomen en bergen die niet moeten onderdoen aan die van Arizona. Mocht het nog niet duidelijk zijn: ik ben verliefd op dit eiland…
In half a day you can walk to Sal Rei, the capital of the island. A stopover at Morabeza Beach Bar and another one on the top of the dune between Morabeza and Sal Rei (you can sit here for hours without seeing one single tourist). We also did a full day island tour with Giggling Gecko (English), that we discovered thanks to TripAdvisor. A relaxed atmosphere and you see all that the island has to offer. And that’s more than volcanic soil. Beaches, a desert, forests of palm trees and mountains that are equal to those of Arizona. If it is not clear yet: I’m in love with this island…
Wij boekten via Arke (Belgen onder ons: België vs Nederland was een verschil van €400 per persoon) – hiervoor kan je wel even naar Schiphol reizen. De reisduur bedraagt /- 6 uur. We verbleven in het RIU Karamboa hotel.
