Bad news about Brownie
Wie me volgt op Twitter of Instagram had het misschien al voorbij zien komen: Brownie is ziek. Ongeneeslijk ziek. Enkele weken geleden begon hij plots heel veel te drinken, hij werd nog rustiger dan hij al was en ik zag hem enkele keren zijn evenwicht verliezen. Ik dacht onmiddellijk aan nierfalen (ik heb in mijn kinderjaren twee katten hieraan verloren, en de symptomen kwamen me bekend voor). Brownie zijn bloed werd naar het lab gestuurd en het antwoord was niet wat we hadden verwacht. Zijn nieren zijn prima in orde, maar Brownie heeft wél FIP.

A few weeks ago he suddenly started to drink a lot, he became quieter, and I saw his losing balance several times. I immediately thought of kidney failure (I have lost two cats on this in my childhood, and the symptoms were familiar to me). Brownie his blood was sent to the lab and the answer was not what we had expected. His kidneys are fine, but Brownie has FIP.
FIP, of Feline Infectious Peritonitis, is één van de meest vreselijke ziektes die een kat kan krijgen. Niet alleen voor de kat, maar ook voor de baasjes is dit geen fijn nieuws. Ik ga hier het hoe en wat niet uitgebreid uitleggen, daar bestaan heel goede websites voor. In het kort: FIP zorgt voor ontstekingshaarden in het lichaam en in de organen. Er zijn twee varianten: de droge en de natte vorm. Bij de natte vorm zwelt de buik helemaal op en sterft de kat vaak binnen de paar dagen. Brownie heeft de droge vorm, waarbij katten meestal nog enkele weken tot enkele maanden leven. Maar de droge vorm, in tegenstelling tot de natte variant, is heel wat moeilijker vast te stellen. De symtomen zijn heel wazig en zelfs met bloedonderzoek kan je nooit met 100% zekerheid zeggen dat het FIP is, hoewel het bij Brownie 95% zeker is – wegens de bijkomende symptomen.

The symptoms are quite blurred and even blood tests are not 100% accurate. In short: you can never say it is FIP, although the vet is 95% sure Brownie has FIP – due to the additional symptoms.
Op dit moment eet hij minder, is hij al een halve kilo afgevallen en slaapt hij bijna de hele dag door. Medicijnen bestaan niet. We ondersteunen hem zo goed als mogelijk met vloeibare vitaminen en tabletjes tegen de misselijkheid. Op dit moment is zijn levenskwaliteit nog te goed om hem al in te laten slapen, maar op een bepaald moment gaan we die beslissing toch moeten nemen.

We support him as best as possible with liquid vitamins and tablets for nausea. At this time, his quality of life is still too good to put him asleep, but at some point in the future, we’re going to take that decision anyway.
Het virus dat FIP veroorzaakt, is overdraagbaar, dus naar alle waarschijnlijkheid is ook Roosje drager. Of het virus ook bij haar zal muteren in FIP, moeten we afwachten (de kans is /- 5%). We hopen uit de grond van ons hart dat Roosje hiervan gespaard zal blijven. Het aantal posts hier op Beauty Statement zal de komende tijd misschien wat minderen, aangezien ik mijn tijd en liefde nu liever in Brownie zijn verzorging steek. Hopelijk kan Brownie nog enkele maanden gelukkig leven, maar dat weet je bij FIP nooit… Willen jullie hem allemaal virtuele knuffeltjes sturen? Dat zou hij geweldig vinden!
The virus that causes FIP is transferable, so in all likelihood Roosje is a carrier. Whether the virus will mutate into FIP, that’s unsure (the probability is /- 5%). We hope from the bottom of our hearts that Roosje will be spared. I can not assure a lot of posts here on Beauty Statement during the next few weeks, since I prefer to give Brownie a lot of time and love.
