Our Home – the smallest room of ‘em all

We wonen nu alweer anderhalf jaar in ons appartement in Antwerpen. Volgend jaar gaan we uitkijken naar een nieuw huisje – in de Kempen, back to our roots. Wil ik jullie het interieur van onze huidige thuis dus laten zien, is nú het moment. Ik maak er gelijk een serie van, ruimte per ruimte, anders zou ik een record breken van langste post ooit hier op Beauty Statement. Beginnen doen we met het kleinste kamertje: het toilet. Edit: Het licht van de foto’s is niet ideaal, wegens een (obvious) kleine en donkere kamer en zeer weinig ruimte om te fotograferen.

Since 18 months, we live in our apartment in the centre of Antwerp. Next year, we plan to move back to our roots – the so called “Kempen” (the north of Belgium). So I want to show you guys the interior of our current home, nów is the time. Let’s make it a so called serie: room per room (otherwise I would break the record for longest post ever here on Beauty Statement). We start with the smallest room of ‘em all: the toilet. Edit: The light of the images is not ideal, due to an (obvious) small and dark room and very little space to shoot.

Wij vinden toiletten vaak één van de saaiste/lelijkste ruimtes in huis. Gele of beige kleuren, vreselijk ouderwetse tegeltjes tegen de muur, de geur van chemische reiniger, een mandje met magazines en de obligate wc-rolhouder en -borstel. Aan die twee laatste kunnen we natuurlijk weinig veranderen. Wij gingen voor een simpele houder van Ikea, een zwarte borstel en zwart vuilbakje. Ook het haakje voor de handdoek én de handdoek zelf komen van Ikea.

We believe The Toilet is often one of the most boring/ most ugly rooms in a house. Yellow or beige colours, old tiles on the wall, the smell of chemical cleaner, a basket of magazines and the obligatory toilet roll holder and -brush. Unfortunately, we do need those two last items. We went for a simple holder from Ikea, a black brush and a black garbage bin. The hook for the towel and the towel itself are from Ikea as well.

De basis van ons appartement bestaat uit 3 kleuren: wit, grijs en zwart. Daaraan hebben we heel wat felle kleurtjes toegevoegd – zowel op de muren als in de accessoires. Ook voor het toilet is dit niet anders: donkere tegels op de vloer, die doorlopen langs de achterste muur. 3 muren kregen een fushia-berryrode kleur (zie collage – op de foto’s ziet de muur er nogal rood uit). Om geen al te claustrofobisch gevoel over te houden na een toiletbezoek, bleef de deur wit en ook de achterste muur kreeg een witte verflaag.

The basis of our apartment consists of three colours: white, grey and black. To make it a bit more interesting, we have added a lot of bright colours – both on the walls and in the accessories. The toilet is no exception: dark tiles on the floor and the back wall and three walls were given a fushia-berry red color (see collage – in the pictures, the wall looks quite red). We didn’t want to create a claustrophobic feeling, so the door remained white and the back wall (above the tiles) got a white layer of paint.

De zeepdispenser stamt nog uit mijn studententijd en kocht ik bij Hema. Subtiele geurstokjes van Rituals staan ook altijd paraat. Aangezien er niet veel bergruimte is in het toilet, kozen we ervoor een grote vaas neer te zetten en daar een voorraad toiletrollen in te steken. Het kader komt van Ikea, de poster kocht ik bij Fab.eu (nu hem.com). We houden erg van de combinatie Ikea als basis en design als finishing touch – dat komt in elke ruimte weer terug. Als voorbeeld: 8 euro voor een kader (Ikea), 40 euro voor de poster (Fab).

The soap dispenser dates back to my college time, I once bought it at Hema. Subtle Rituals fragrance sticks are always there. Since we don’t have much storage space in this room, we have chosen to put down a large vase to stock the toilet rolls. The frame is from Ikea, the poster was bought at Fab.eu (now hem.com). We really love the combination of an Ikea base and design stuff as finishing touches – you will see that in every single room. For example: 8 euros for a frame (Ikea), 40 euros for the poster (Fab).

En last but not least: onze beste tip voor de kleinste kamer uit het huis. Ga voor een soft close systeem op je toilet. Dit wil zeggen: als de man(nen) in huis de wc-bril netjes naar beneden doen (zoals wij hen vriendelijk vragen), krijg je niet een harde “klets” te horen, maar sluit de bril zachtjes af. Bekijk even

And last but not least: our number 1 tip for the smallest room of ‘em all. We love our soft close system. This means that if the guy(s) at home close the toilet seat (as we kindly ask them to do), you do not hear a hard “smack” but instead, the seat closes softly. Take a look at this video and you’ll know exactly what I mean. I. Love. It.
