Fall/Winter Coat Trends for 2014

As I embrace fall, and look forward to winter – and another year of the Polar Vortex, yippee – I have coats on the brain. Every year I seem to add another coat to my collection, or at least dream about picking up a new one, preferably in a color. So, I thought now would be the perfect time to showcase the latest trends in fall/winter coats.

The Moto

Hello Moto! Don’t ask me why, but every time I see a Moto jacket, I think of that ad tag line.

The motorcycle jacket has made a huge comeback in the past year, and it looks like that trend is continuing this year. What I love about the Moto jacket is that it can be worn from fall to spring. The deconstructured look can be paired with your favorite jeans, or an elegant dress.

One thing that I’ve noticed this year, is that many designers are changing up the traditional black Moto, by adding more zippers, fresh colors, or contrasting sleeves. This is one jacket that I will be adding to my holiday wish list.

Plaid

Another classic coat trend making a comeback is the plaid coat. I am definitely excited to finally see more than just solid colors, or the Burberry print, showing up on a variety of winter jackets and fall coats. The plaid pattern seems to range from the traditional black and red, to the bit more modern, yet subdued blue and red. Some designers are also experimenting with pastels, such as mint, pink, and baby blue.

The Robe

The runways were all a twitter earlier this year with the Robe Coat. As much as I love my terry cloth robe, I’m not sure how I feel about wearing it as a coat, tempting as it may be. I might be persuaded considering how gorgeous these coats are, and how figure flattering and feminine. The Robe is the perfect coat for cinching and showing off your waist, which can be a challenge in a coat. This new trend is being offered up in many different colors and prints, from camel to plaid.

The Boyfriend

Men’s wear has always been a popular trend in woman’s clothing. In the last few years, we’ve seen fashionistas sporting boyfriend jeans, which they are now pairing with a men’s inspired chambray shirt. It’s no surprise that the boyfriend trend has now moved over to coats.

The Boyfriend coat is probably one of the more traditional looks of the season, but with designers adding touches of color and print, it feels new again. The cut of these types of coats are loose with long lines, which not only makes them flattering, it also makes them easy to pairs with everything in your closet.

Oversized

In the completely opposite side of fall/winter coat trends this season is the Oversized coat. Perhaps designers were listening to a little too much “Thrift Shop” from Macklemore and Ryan Lewis when they thought up this look, as it definitely isn’t for everyone.

The Oversized coat is big, boxy, and offers plenty of room for layering during those very cold winters. If you are going to try out this look, be sure to pair it with more fitted jeans, pants, or tall boots to avoid looking heavy an boxy.

Capes

An alternative to the Oversized coat is the Cape. Though it can seem a little daunting, it still offers a fun alternative to the traditional fall coat. To me, the cape has a very retro feel, which I love. With so many fun colors and lengths to choose from, the Cape can work for just about anyone. From what I’ve read, the key to not letting the Cape overpower you, is to choose one that fits your frame and isn’t too long or too short.

You can wear the Cape in a more conservative color, or go bold with a fun pattern or color. The Cape also allows you to easily layer a thick sweater, or lighter jacket underneath should the Polar Vortex decide to make multiple appearances this year.

Faux Fur

Feeling particularly bold this season? Why not try out a Faux Fur coat, which not only keeps you warm, but also doesn’t involve killing baby animals. Faux Fur coats feel and look indulgent, yet are available at all different price ranges. You can try out the look with just a vest, or you can go full on fuzziness with a short or medium length coat.

Another fun feature of the Faux Fur coat is that it comes in more than just traditional animal prints. Designers have really upped the ante with crazy patterns, or retro inspired stripes.

Parka, aka The Puffy Coat

I must confess, I love my puffy coat. It kept me warm during Chicago’s Snowpocalypse and during my frigid trip to NYC last January. With that being said, it isn’t the most figure flattering, despite my best intentions to make it so.

Thankfully, the Parka is getting an upgrade this season. Now you can stay cozy and warm, without looking like a walking comforter. New prints, patterns, and colors are showing up at all price points. There are also more lengths to choose from, which is great for all ages, sizes, and body types. You can choose a shorter coat for more casual occasions and looks, or a longer parka for a dressy look.

What coat trend are you thinking of trying out this year?
